La Salle 82, Quinnipiac 71
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Jermaine Thomas scored 23 points and handed out eight assists and Steven Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, both season highs, as La Salle defeated Quinnipiac 82-71 on Monday.
The Explorers’ victory snapped the Bobcats’ 6-game winning streak.
Gary Neal and Lewis Fadipe each had 11 points for La Salle (5-4), which posted a 47-31 edge in rebounds. Rashaun Banjo had 21 points and Kason Mims 16 points for Quinnipiac (6-2) in the first game between the two teams.
Neither team had more than a 4-point lead in the second half until La Salle ran off nine straight points to take a 60-52 advantage with 6:37 to play. The Bobcats closed to 64-63 on a 3-point shot by Craig Benson with 4:37 left, but the Explorers then ran off 10 straight points, capped by two free throws by Thomas, boosting the lead to 74-63 with 1:17 to go.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first half as the Explorers made only three of their first 18 shots. La Salle rallied to tie the score 28-28, but trailed 37-33 at halftime.
