La Salle 73, Cornell 59

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Jermaine Thomas scored 16 points and was one of three freshmen teammates in double figures Saturday as La Salle defeated Cornell 73-59.

Steven Smith had 16 points and Gary Neal had 14 for La Salle (4-4). Sophomore Cody Toppert had a career-high 27 points for Cornell (2-5).

La Salle took a 59-43 lead, its biggest of the game, on a three pointer by Thomas with 9:07 left to play. Cornell went on a 13-2 run to narrow the gap to 61-56 with 4:35 remaining, but La Salle responded with eight straight points to seal the victory.

Toppert hit his first six shots of the game and scored 22 in the first half, but La Salle broke a 23-23 tie with 11:04 left in the first and went on a 15-3 run to lead 42-31 at the half.

Topper hit 10 of his 17 shots, including 6 of 10 attempts from 3-point range. Thomas hit 4 of 6 attempted 3-pointers.

The loss was Cornell’s fourth straight.
