Hawaii 90, Bradley 69

HONOLULU (AP)—Tony Akpan scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds and Haim Shimonovich added 20 points and nine boards Friday night as Hawaii defeated Bradley, 90-69, in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic.

Akpan, who entered the game averaging five points, hit on 11-of-13 shots to power the Rainbow Warriors (5-1) to their second highest offensive output of the season. Carl English added 19 points for the winners with 10 coming over the final six minutes.

For the Braves (2-7), who have lost five straight, James Gillingham had 22 points. Danny Granger was helped off the court early in the second half after suffering a low-grade concussion, but returned to finish with 19 points.

Gillingham, Granger and Phillip Gilbert combined for all but two of the points as Bradley stayed close at the half, 41-38.

However, Akpan scored five points and Shimonovich added a basket to open a double-digit lead that Hawaii never relinquished.

For the game, Hawaii made 36-of-70 from the floor and outrebounded the Braves, 42 to 22.

Bradley, which had lost its last four games by a total of 12 points, were held to their lowest season total. It had been averaging 81.6 points a game.
