Fairfield 83, Iona 78
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Rob Thomson scored eight of his 12 points in overtime to lead Fairfield past Iona 83-78 Thursday night.
Nick Delfico led Fairfield (2-2, 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Oscar Garcia added 15 points and had four rebounds.
The Gaels (4-2, 1-1 MAAC) led 66-65 with 0.8 seconds remaining in regulation.
Off the inbounds, Fairfield freshman Michael Bell was fouled by Courtney Fields before the buzzer and was sent to the foul line with a chance to win it. Bell stood alone at the foul line with no time remaining on the clock and made the first, but missed the second, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Fairfield never trailed. The Stags made 11-of-16 foul shots in overtime.
It was the second straight overtime victory for the Stags.
Iona, which played without starting center Greg Jenkins (shoulder injury), was led by Steve Smith’s 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Gaels rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit and took a 60-59 lead with 3:23 remaining.
Fields and Charles Henson each had 15 points for Iona. Fairfield had lost six straight games to Iona dating to the 1999-2000 season.
