Virginia 90, Long Island 86
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)—Travis Watson had 26 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals and transfer Todd Billet added 20 points Friday night, lifting Virginia to a 90-86 victory against Long Island in the season-opener for both teams.
The Cavaliers (1-0), who beat the Blackbird 96-50 to open the 2000 season, won despite being outrebounded 41-30 and allowing Long Island to make 10 3-pointers.
JaJa Bey led the Blackbirds (0-1) with 21 points.
Playing without guard Jermaine Harper, who was suspended indefinitely after getting charged with driving under the influence, the Cavaliers shot 66.7 percent in the first half, but led only 44-40 at the break because the Blackbirds made six 3-pointers.
Watson was 11-for-13 from the field, while Billet, who sat out last season after transferring from Rutgers, was 5-for-10 from behind the arc in his Cavaliers debut.
Jason Clark added 12 points for the Cavaliers.
Maurice Yearwood hit 5 3-pointers and added 17 points for LIU. Derek Bell had 16 points and eight rebounds and Antawn Dobie had 15 points and seven rebounds.
