Usher’s 30 leads MVSU past Alcorn State 80-75

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP)—Davon Usher scored 30 points, making six 3 pointers, and Mississippi Valley State held off Alcorn State 80-75 Saturday night to split the season series and snap a two-game skid.

The Delta Devils (4-18, 4-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) led 34-21 at halftime and by 20 with 4:18 left. But the Braves (9-18, 7-5) used an 18-7 run to trim the deficit to single digits.

Darryl Marshall added 13 points and Matt Smith and Cordarius Samples scored 11 each for MVSU, while Ervin Thomas pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Delta Devils were 10 of 25 from beyond the arc, with Usher 6 of 10 to score in double figures for the sixth straight game.

MVSU made 30 of 38 free throws compared to 17 of 37 for Alcorn State.

Devonte Hampton’s 21 points led the Braves, who beat MVSU 72-67 on Jan. 12, but have lost two of their past three.
