Wis.-Milwaukee beats Upper Iowa in home opener

MILWAUKEE (AP)—Avery Smith scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Wisconsin-Milwaukee to an 87-59 victory over Upper Iowa Wednesday night in the Panthers’ home opener.

Deonte Roberts added 12 points, James Eayrs 11 and Ricky Franklin 10 for Milwaukee (3-1).

The victory kept coach Rob Jeter undefeated in four home openers.

Division II Upper Iowa (0-2 )was led by Mark Lafrenz with 11 points.

The Panthers took control early with an 11-4 run that put them up 15-8. Tone Boyle began the decisive scoring spurt with a 3-point play with 14:54 to snap a 4-4 tie and James Eayrs ended it with a 3-pointer.

Milwaukee never lost the lead after that.
