Barbosa nets 27, UMBC hits 13 3-pointers in 82-37 rout of Goucher

CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP)—Ray Barbosa scored a season-high 27 points, and Maryland-Baltimore County equaled a school record with 13 3-pointers in an 82-37 rout of Goucher on Saturday night.

Brian Hodges added 20 points and Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor scored 11 apiece for the Retrievers (7-2), who are off to the best start in their 22-year Division I history.

Darrin Boswell led Goucher (2-5) with 14 points. The Division III Gophers lost their first game in regulation this season; their previous four losses, consecutive overtime defeats, matched an NCAA record.

UMBC’s 45-point victory was the second-most lopsided triumph in school history, trailing only a 118-54 trouncing of Gallaudet during the 1973-74 season.

Barbosa hit five of the Retrievers’ 13 3-point shots, while Hodges and Greene had three each.

The Gophers, who made only 15 of 55 attempts from the floor, scored the fewest points in the program’s 18 years. The previous low came in an 83-38 loss at Robert Morris on Dec. 30, 2006.

Goucher shot 6-for-26 from the field in the first half, committed 13 turnovers and trailed 40-15 at halftime.

Barbosa scored 12 straight UMBC points—hitting three 3-pointers and converting a three-point play—as the Retrievers closed the opening 20 minutes on a 27-7 run.
