Gaines scores 24, Georgia beats Augusta State

ATHENS, Ga. (AP)—Sundiata Gaines’ 24 points, including two layups in the last 96 seconds, rallied Georgia to an 81-74 win on Monday night over in-state Division II foe Augusta State.

Augusta State (4-2) led for much of the game, and took a 73-69 lead when Tyrekus Bowman dunked at the end of a fast break with 4:11 to play.

Jeremy Price of Georgia (5-1) answered with a dunk at 3:36, and Billy Humphrey made two free throws with 2:09 to go to tie the score at 73

Bowman and Ben Madgen each missed on Augusta State’s next trip, and Gaines beat the Jaguars down the floor for the go-ahead layup with 1:36 to play. After Bowman missed a short jumper, Gaines patiently penetrated for a power layup with 37.7 seconds to play to put the Bulldogs ahead 79-73. Free throws by Terrence Woodbury and Humphrey accounted for the final margin.

Madgen led Augusta State with 21 points, and Daniel Dixon scored 17 including five 3-pointers. Bowman added 16 points.
