Gibson scores 20 in NM State’s 100-64 win over LeMoyne-Owen

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Jonathan Gibson scored a career-high 20 points to lead New Mexico State to a 100-64 rout over Division II opponent LeMoyne-Owen Sunday night.

Gibson sank four 3-pointers on four shots to help stake the Aggies (2-2) to a 57-32 halftime lead. New Mexico State shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 25 percent for LeMoyne-Owen (0-1). The Magicians managed to score only 4 points in the paint.

“Coach (Marvin Menzies) has been working with me on shot selection,” Gibson said. “I got to the right spots and it worked out for me tonight.”

New Mexico State jumped to a 12-3 lead in the first four minutes as Gibson scored 8 points. LeMoyne-Owen then outscored the Aggies 13-12 to bring the score to 24-16 at the 10-minute mark.

The Magicians were plagued by foul trouble and turnovers as New Mexico State responded with a 33-16 streak.

Hatila Passos scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half to pace the Aggies’ streak. Wendell McKines added 19 points, 11 of them in the second half.

“We counted on our depth and style of play to wear them down,” Aggie coach Marvin Menzies said.

He added that he counted 41 deflections in favor of NMSU. “According to the Rick Pitino school of coaching, any time you can get 35 deflections per game, you’ll win 90 to 95 percent of your games,” he said.

Menzies played his entire 15-man roster as New Mexico State coasted to their second consecutive win at home.

Rasuu Buluu led the Magicians with 26 points and was 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Jeff Webb had 10 points and Jihad Sharif added 9.
