I was late to tune into the WCC Championship last night -- some kid was talking smack to me in FIFA 09, and I had to set him straight -- so I totally missed this: Before the game, St. Mary's was assessed a technical foul for dunking in pregame warmups. This is not a joke. Do not adjust your dial:
The Gaels were down even before the ball went up. One of them dunked during pregame warm-ups, a violation of NCAA rules. A technical foul was called. So as nine other players clustered around the tipoff circle, Gonzaga's Matt Bouldin repaired to the free-throw line.
Bouldin made one of the free throws, and St. Mary's found itself trailing 1-0 before the game even began. This didn't affect the outcome, as that point was merely 1/25th of the Gaels' eventualy 83-58 deficit, but it did teach me a depressing lesson:
You think you know the rules. You write about college basketball all year and you stress it and you read about it and you study it, and you think you know. You don't think; you know. And then a game in early March comes along and reveals to you that not only is it frowned upon to dunk in NCAA pregame warmups, it's actually against the rules of the game. And that's when you realize: The NCAA rulebook is too swift, too nebulous, too dense to understand. You'd have a better time studying Cote D'Ivoire's World Bank balance sheets.
It's then you realize you don't know anything. It's scary.
