The Dagger - NCAAB

If Tom Izzo to Oregon had been the most bizarre rumor of college basketball's silly season thus far, ladies and gentleman we have a new leader in the clubhouse!

According to a report from Jeff Goodman of, Wake Forest has targeted Colorado head coach Jeff Bzdelik to replace the recently fired Dino Gaudio. The deal is not done yet, but Goodman tweets that it's "close."

Although Bzdelik's daughter attends Wake Forest, he once coached at Davidson and he worked with Demon Deacons athletic director Ron Wellman at Northwestern, it's still difficult to understand how the 57-year-old Colorado coach could be the top choice.

Gaudio was 61-31 in three seasons at Wake Forest; Bzdelik is 36-58 in the same time at Colorado.

Gaudio landed a top 10 recruiting class to play in his up-tempo system; Bzdelik runs a structured Princeton offense hybrid.

Gaudio was crucified for his lack of postseason success at Wake Forest; Bzdelik has never won an NCAA tournament game as a head coach.

In fairness to Bzdelik, his resume is not without merit. He was highly respected as coach of the Denver Nuggets and led Air Force to 50 wins in two seasons from 2005 to 2007 before leaving to attempt to rebuild Colorado.

But despite that success, would hiring Bzdelik be anything more than a lateral move from Gaudio? A better Xs and Os coach, surely, but an upgrade? Probably not.

When Wellman surprised fans by dumping Gaudio a few weeks after a season in which Wake Forest faded late but still made the second round of the NCAA tournament, the assumption was he had to have a splashy replacement in mind.

If that man is Bzdelik, Wake Forest fans are going to be very disappointed.
