It was a jubilant Trail Blazers squad that ended the 2007-08 season at 41-41 with a 100-91 loss at Phoenix Wednesday.

Though the second half of the season looked decidedly different from the first, coach Nate McMillan had seen enough to declare the season an unqualified success.

"This is the reason I came, to be a part of this," the Blazers coach said. "It was another step forward not to have a losing season. We started building this team, we have all the pieces and the next step is the playoffs."

Portland took a blow before the season even began, when No. 1 pick Greg Oden was lost to microfracture knee surgery. The Blazers, the youngest team in the league with an average age of 24 years and 22 days on opening day, started off slow, losing their first nine road...

The Greg Oden Era for the Portland Trail Blazers started, well, without Greg Oden. The much ballyhooed No. 1 draft pick was sidelined before his rookie season started because of microfracture surgery on his right knee. And without Oden, expectations were bleak for the NBA's youngest team (third youngest in league history).

Greg Oden is simply not the type to dwell on the misfortune of his first season in the NBA. The perpetually positive 7-footer is looking ahead. "I'm just antsy, you know, to compete. To get out there and to be able to win a game, I miss that feeling," he said. Oden's rookie season was iced before it even started when he had microfracture surgery on his right knee last September.

The Phoenix Suns were looking ahead to the playoffs long before they finished off their 100-91 victory over Portland. San Antonio's rout of Utah earlier in Wednesday night locked Phoenix (55-27) into the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The Suns will open on the road against the No. 3 Spurs, their postseason nemesis.

The Portland Trail Blazers have requested waivers on injured forward Darius Miles, a move to save money under the NBA salary cap. A medical examiner appointed by the league and the players association determined the damage to Miles' right knee is severe enough to qualify as a career-ending injury, general manager Kevin Pritchard said Monday.
