Prosecution grilled over slur in Jayson Williams case (AP)

An appeals court panel grilled a prosecutor Wednesday in Jayson Williams' manslaughter case about why the circumstances surrounding a racial slur used by an investigator shouldn't be divulged to the former NBA star's defense team. Prosecutors don't dispute that the slur was uttered in 2002 by a senior officer connected to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office.

The 76ers are expected to be about $11 million below the salary cap in July. While team president and general manager Ed Stefanski realizes re-signing restricted free agents Andre Iguodala and Lou Williams is important, as is bringing in a perimeter shooter to the league's worst 3-point shooting team in 2007-08, his top priority is adding a quality power forward.

The hard-working Reggie Evans and rookie Thaddeus Young, who is a natural small forward, handled the bulk of the "four" minutes this season. The offensively challenged Evans is best suited to 18 to 20 minutes a game, and the 6-8 Young, while tall and athletic enough to match up against more than half of the starting power forwards in the league, is at a size disadvantage against more traditional, bigger fours.

The 76ers want coach Maurice Cheeks and guard Andre Iguodala to stick around for longer than one more season. Adding a top-tier power forward and a 3-point shooter via free agency or trade would be nice additions, too, for a Sixers team suddenly on the rise in the East. No doubt, this will be a busy summer for team president Ed Stefanski.

Stretch that fun and fast-breaking style over a full season and Philadelphia believes it can run all the way to the top of the Eastern Conference.
