Although his season averages still show he has started slowly, Dwight Howard is back in the groove.

Howard will go into Sunday night's game in New York against the Knicks no longer worried about explaining his unexpectedly mediocre start.

Howard—defending Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-NBA center—has played exceptionally well in the last two victories in Atlanta and Milwaukee.

He had 22 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots against the Hawks. He then had 25 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks against the Bucks.

"It feels good right now," Howard said.

Howard has spent much of the early season in foul trouble, which limited his minutes and limited his points, rebounds and blocked shots.

Vince Carter took an elbow to the face. He returned in time to knock out the Bucks. Carter scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half after getting four stitches inside his mouth and lip, and Dwight Howard added 25 points and 20 rebounds to rally the Orlando Magic to a 100-98 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday night.

Orlando forward Matt Barnes says he'll appeal a $20,000 fine for throwing a basketball into the stands, and coach Stan Van Gundy joked he had a novel idea for Barnes the next time he needs to vent his frustration. Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson needs surgery again. The All-Star will have arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on torn cartilage in his left knee, the team said. He is expected to miss four to six weeks. Nelson was injured in the fourth quarter of Monday night's win against Charlotte. But he finished the game on the court and showed no signs of injury.
