Vince Carter will be back in the lineup soon, and when he returns, the playing time for J.J. Redick will shrink again in a reserve role. Redick, though, has used this brief opportunity to finally prove he belongs in the NBA. And that's going to help him considerably down the road.

Redick may be getting his last start Sunday when the Magic play at Oklahoma City, brimming with confidence after helping the Magic (5-1) jump to a good start in their quest to win an NBA title.

In six games—four starts—Redick has averaged 14.7 points, three rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. He has been consistent with good team defense and only three turnovers in six games combined.

"I think I've played well," he said.

Dwight Howard made up for a miserable performance against the Pistons three nights earlier. Even so, he was still irked by what happened in the fourth quarter. Howard's 22 points and 12 rebounds were enough to help the Orlando Magic hold off Charlie Villanueva and Detroit 110-103 Friday night, but the win was soured by the Pistons' 35-point fourth quarter.

Ryan Anderson admits he's been joking with Rashard Lewis about who will be the Orlando Magic's starting power forward when the All-Star returns from suspension. Orlando Magic guard Vince Carter was sidelined against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night with a sprained left ankle. Carter was first injured Friday against New Jersey. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Carter aggravated the ankle again Tuesday night versus Detroit. Carter's status is day to day. The 32-year-old guard was Orlando's biggest acquisition this summer.

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard briefly left Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Pistons with an apparent shoulder injury. Howard was driving to the basket early in the third quarter when he was fouled by Rodney Stuckey and landed hard on his right shoulder. He stayed on the floor for several moments before walking off the court in obvious pain.

While a sprained left ankle spoiled Vince Carter's return to New Jersey, it did nothing to slow down Dwight Howard and the Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic.
