Appeals court to consider slur in Jayson Williams case (AP)

The manslaughter case against former New Jersey Nets star Jayson Williams returns to court. Attorneys for Williams are scheduled to argue in front of a three-judge panel on Wednesday that prosecutors must divulge all details about a racial slur used by an investigator in the case. The dispute over the slur postponed Williams' retrial for reckless manslaughter, which was to have begun in January.

There was good. Like the Nets pulling off a trade to land Devin Harris, a young, rising star, along with two first-round draft picks in exchange for a disgruntled Jason Kidd. Given the circumstances, where the entire world knew Kidd wanted out and had to be dealt, the Nets made a good trade.

There was bad. Like the Nets seeing their string of six straight playoff appearances, a feat that currently only the Spurs, Pistons and Mavs also can claim, come to a crashing end. That was bad.

There was ugly. Like 31 games where the Nets lost by double digits. Or 46 games where they surrendered 100 or more points. For a team that always prided itself on defense, that was ugly. Very ugly.

Plus, there were enough injuries and enough off-court issues and drama for a prime time soap...

A man who accused Richard Jefferson of grabbing him by the throat in an incident in a Minneapolis club this year had too much to drink, the New Jersey Nets forward said in a radio interview. Jefferson was charged with assault on Wednesday for the Jan. 27 incident when the Nets were in Minneapolis to play the Timberwolves.

Kiki Vandeweghe became the New Jersey Nets' general manager Thursday, less than six months after being hired as a special assistant to team president Rod Thorn. Vandeweghe replaces Ed Stefanski, who left in midseason to become the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. "We are very pleased that Kiki will continue his relationship with the Nets' organization," Thorn said.

New Jersey Nets guard Vince Carter had surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle on Wednesday. Dr. Martin O'Malley performed the surgery in New York, Nets president Rod Thorn said. Carter will be on crutches for several weeks, followed by rehabilitation. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

For the New Jersey Nets, missing the playoffs took a lot the fun out of rallying from a 20-point deficit to beat the Charlotte Bobcats. Richard Jefferson scored 28 points and hit a go-ahead jumper in overtime and the Nets limited the Bobcats to 47 points in the final 29 minutes in a 112-108 meaningless victory on Tuesday night.
