Alonzo Mourning is returning to the Miami Heat -- as an executive. Mourning announced Friday that he will soon begin a new job as Miami's vice president of player development, with a wide range of responsibilities, many of them off the court and in community relations areas. He'll also spend some time mentoring young players, a role he took on in the latter portions of his playing career.

It's been a quiet offseason to this point for the Heat. There are no serious discussions (or rumors) about a contract extension with guard Dwyane Wade, there isn't much money for free agency, and the team doesn't have a first-round pick in the June draft.

Wade has consistently said he's not sure if he'll negotiate a contract extension during the offseason. He can opt out of his current contract after next season and become part of the high-profile 2010 free agent class. Or he can negotiate an extension during the offseason, before the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expires. Some think players might get more money under the current CBA because under the next CBA, the length of a maximum contract (currently five years) might be reduced.

A new North Miami high school will be named after former NBA star Alonzo Mourning, rather than the first female U.S. Attorney General, Janet Reno. A naming committee had earlier settled on the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School Biscayne Bay Campus. The Miami-Dade School Board on Wednesday gave it the final OK.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has signed a kidney transplant bill named for former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning. Mourning, himself a kidney transplant recipient, was on hand for the signing ceremony Wednesday at a Tallahassee dialysis center. It was a return visit to the capital city for Mourning. He met with Crist and lawmakers in April to seek their support for the legislation (HB 675).
