When scouting the Miami Heat, Denver coach George Karl noticed one glaring difference from last season. "Scary," he said. Quentin Richardson will take that as a compliment. Perhaps the biggest surprise within Miami's eye-catching 5-1 start, Richardson is averaging 10.5 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 50 percent.

Although Michael Beasley has emerged as the Heat's day-to-day starting power forward, he has yet to emerge as the team's closing power forward.

For now, former starter Udonis Haslem continues to handle closing time, often while Beasley watches from the bench during the latter stages.

"He's going to get his opportunity. We need him," coach Erik Spoelstra insists. "We're going to need him to play an important role and. I just went a different direction with the guys that were in the game."

Granted, there certainly is more to the game than scoring. Beasley did not have a single rebound in his second-half minutes Wednesday against the Wizards, and had just one in the second half a night earlier against the Suns.

Dwyane Wade wasn't about to take himself out of this game. The Miami Heat star played every minute of the second half on his way to a 40-point game, including a jumper with 25 seconds left that gave Miami the lead for good on the way to a 93-89 win against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Alan Ogg, a 7-foot-2 shotblocker who played for UAB and spent parts of three seasons in the NBA, died Sunday from complications from a staph infection, a university spokesman said. He was 42. UAB spokesman Norm Reilly said Ogg died at UAB Hospital. Ogg played 80 NBA games over three seasons beginning in 1990 with the Miami Heat, who had a moment of silence Sunday night before playing Chicago.

A rebuilding strategy centered on chasing the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh makes perfect sense to a team like the New York Knicks. Wade and Bosh aren't so sure.
