Maybe the Pacers can be a better defensive team after all.

Going back to their game at New York, the Pacers have held their opponents to 34.6 percent shooting in the past five quarters. They held a Wizards team that has explosive scorers Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler to 39 percent shooting on Friday.

"That's huge," point guard T.J. Ford said. "It gives us a lot of confidence knowing we don't have to worry about scoring. The scoring will come, we just have to continue to play defense like we're doing."

The Pacers have become a more athletic defensive team now that coach Jim O'Brien has decided to go with a small lineup. He's starting T.J. Ford and Brandon Rush in the backcourt with Dahntay Jones, Danny Granger and Roy Hibbert up front.

Indiana Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough will make his pro debut Friday night against Washington after missing the preseason and four regular-season games with a right shin injury. Coach Jim O'Brien said the team's first-round pick from North Carolina will be a reserve, and the plan is to play him for about 16 minutes.

The Indiana Pacers have picked up the options on starters Roy Hibbert and Brandon Rush. The Pacers made the announcement Sunday in a news release. Both players were chosen in the first round of the 2008 draft and acquired through trades. Hibbert, a 7-foot-2 center from Georgetown, averaged 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds last season.
