The Rockets had lost both games of a homestand, the first time they had lost consecutive times this season, to fall to .500 for the first time since the second game of the season.

They believed, however, that they had made progress. So thorough was the Mavericks' 31-point rout of the Rockets on Wednesday that they fell through an 0-for-16 stretch against the Spurs Friday but believed they had improved because they defended well enough to stay in the game, with chances to steal it late.

"I think we did a great job on defense," Aaron Brooks said. "We gave up 130 points to Dallas. I think during the game we did a pretty good job on offense. We had that one stretch where we were getting good shots but missing.
