The Celtics opened their season with a brutal stretch of eight games in 12 days, but they were able to extract seven wins from the run.

The reason became clear very early: the bench.

Led by Rasheed Wallace, Marquis Daniels and Eddie House, the Celts' subs have taken a huge load off the starters' backs. And in a few cases—most notably the opener against Cleveland—the reserves turned the game in Boston's favor after a poor start by the stars.

"We saw it early, what they can do," Pierce said. "We know the potential of our bench. And the more rest we all get, the better it's going to be for all of us.

"It's very competitive when we go up against them in practice.
