Stan Van Gundy would be one of the most sought-after names on the NBA head coaching market ... except it sounds like he's taking himself off the market.
The news comes to us Tuesday morning from "The David Baumann Show" on 1080 The Team in Orlando :
BREAKING: Stan Van Gundy just told us he WILL NOT be a head coach in the NBA next season. It's a family decision.
— David Baumann (@DavidBaumann33) May 21, 2013
Stan Van Gundy: "The longer you are out, the more difficult it is to get back in... Right now it's not in the best interest of my family."
— David Baumann (@DavidBaumann33) May 21, 2013
Van Gundy's Tuesday radio announcement follows a May 15 report by Yahoo! Sports NBA columnist Adrian Wojnarowski that the former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic coach was "unlikely to return to coaching next season." Van Gundy also told Baumann that he hasn't interviewed with any NBA teams, "although several teams had contacted him and he keeps telling them no."

Barclays Center pumps in a ‘signature scent’ for its patrons to enjoy during Brooklyn Nets games (Ball Don't Lie)

The Brooklyn Nets just about define the superficial experience. The team was put together by a billionaire owner that promised a championship in spite of a lacking basketball resume, before tossing tens of millions of dollars at a general manager in Billy King who has long made a habit of going after the biggest names available. Part-owner Jay-Z helped shape the team’s look and image, despite only owning a small percentage of the team, and not even making it out of the franchise’s first year before selling his shares. And the team’s arena, the Barclays Center, followed the latest trends with its exterior look in spite of some quizzical glances from Brooklyn natives.
Perhaps they were reacting to the smell of the place.
On Monday Leslie Albrecht at DNAInfoNewYork.com put together a great piece on the canned smells the Center wafts in through its ventilation system. It’s not an offensive or even obtrusive odor, nor an obvious one, but it’s … something. And definitely noticeable. From Albercht’s piece :
As the last few fans rushed through the arena's front doors, the brisk breeze that followed them gave way to a distinct aroma: a fresh-smelling fragrance with citrus notes that some call the arena's "signature scent," in the words of one Twitter observer .

Depending on what the Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings, and Los Angeles Clippers decide to do with their fluctuating situations over the next few weeks, there could be as many as ten NBA coaching openings to fill during the 2013 offseason. Despite walking away from a potential playoff team in Utah two years ago, a team he’d worked with as an assistant and then head coach for the previous 26 years, former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has tossed his name into the mix of available candidates to fill one of those job openings.
Unless you’re the Milwaukee Bucks, an available team that is closest to Sloan’s home in rural Illinois. You can take that gig and stick it.
(I think that’s how the song goes.)
NBA.com’s David Aldridge was the first to report Sloan’s indifference , through quotes from Sloan’s agent Keith Glass. Glass, Aldridge relays, also represents former Bucks coach Scott Skiles:
"The bottom line is, Jerry doesn't really feel it's the right fit for him right now," Glass said Thursday.

A look around the league and the Web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.
C : SB Nation . While we try to figure out what's wrong with the New York Knicks and who's to blame for the 3-1 hole they're in, Paul Flannery takes the radical step of suggesting we take a look at the team that's beating them — the Indiana Pacers, a marvelous collection of defensive monsters and rising talents that's very much for real.
PF : Memphis Flyer . Chris Herrington's got 10 dynamite notes and nuggets to digest before Wednesday's Game 5 between the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder, including a doozy about the Grizzlies' "clutch" defense that had me racing to NBA.com's stat tool to double-check it.
SF : The Classical . Whether he's authoring legendary victories , flaming out during horrendous defeats or just vomiting uncontrollably on the bench , it's almost impossible to know precisely what Nate Robinson will do next, which is what makes him one of the most compulsively watchable players in the NBA, as Jim Cavan writes.

5 quick facts about Warriors guard Klay Thompson’s 29-point first half (Video) (Ball Don't Lie)

Klay Thompson exploded into the national consciousness on Wednesday night, pouring in 29 first-half points in a scintillating shooting display that left the San Antonio Spurs stunned and helped propel the Golden State Warriors to a convincing 100-91 win . As we bask in the glow of yet another marvelous scoring deluge from the Golden State backcourt, here are five stat notes of interest from the 23-year-old sophomore's brilliant Game 2 coming-out party:
1. Thompson became just the fifth player in the last 10 years to put up 29 points in the first half of a playoff game, joining Dwight Howard ( 31 first-half points against the Atlanta Hawks in 2011), Tony Parker ( 31 against the Dallas Mavericks in 2009), Ray Allen ( 29 against the Chicago Bulls five days after Parker's big first half) and LeBron James ( Game 6 ). Pretty good company, dog.
2. He scored more points, made more field goals (11) and hit more 3-pointers (seven) in the first 24 minutes on Wednesday than he had in any of his first seven full playoff games. When you do that, you can fall off a little bit in the second half — and he did, scoring just five points on 2 for 8 shooting and going scoreless in the fourth quarter — and nobody's really going to mind that much. (It's not like Thompson just disappeared, though; his defense in the second half, especially on Parker, was exemplary.)

George Karl wins the 2012-13 Coach of the Year award (Ball Don't Lie)

He’d trade it in without hesitation for a chance at a Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors, but awards like these usually don’t work that way. George Karl has rightfully won the 2012-13 Coach of the Year award . The Denver Nuggets head man led his star-less roster to 57 wins this season, before injuries and matchup issues led to a first round ouster at the hand of the upstart Warriors. The award comes nearly 30 years into Karl’s coaching career, and this is the first George has ever received this honor on the NBA level.
A richly deserved honor, it should be noted. Karl’s Nuggets traded away MVP-vote earnin’ Carmelo Anthony over two years ago, and in the seasons since the team has quietly added assets, while centering its team on a transition attack that features a different hero every night. Even the team’s closest approximation of a “star,” 2012 All-Star Andre Iguodala, turned in an off year after being dealt to the Nuggets.
On top of that, the Nuggets had to endure one of the more one-sided starts to a season schedule that we’ve ever seen in our many years of obsessing over this league .

The Los Angeles Clippers? Gone till November (Ball Don't Lie)

With every season that ends, for the playoff teams at least, we felt it right to take a look ahead. TNT already has the rights to "Gone Fishin'," and because we're sure that someone, somewhere, still likes that Wyclef song, we're going with "Gone Till November." And, yes, we know the season starts in October. Today? The Los Angeles Clippers.
From the minute the deal sending Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers was announced, it became obvious that the long-suffering franchise was suddenly in the hands of someone special. Most importantly, it was in the hands of someone sullen, with significant sway. After the deal Clipper big men Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan could be seen celebrating following a Clipper practice, all the way back in December of 2011, in full view of teammates that would be likely packaged off to New Orleans in exchange for Paul’s gifts. CP3 mentor Chauncey Billups was quickly given a gig as the team’s resident sage. Coach Vinny Del Negro was quickly given the dubious eye.
Despite whispers about the potential years’ worth of Los Angeles vs. Los Angeles battles in the Western Conference finals, the Clippers have stumbled somewhat. A second round ouster in Paul’s first, chaotic year as point guard in 2012 was passable enough. A 2013 first round dismissal at the hands of a Memphis Grizzlies franchise (if not fully returned roster) that lost to the Clippers in a similar series 12 months before was galling enough. Chris Paul, team leader, appears ticked. Ticked, more than enough.
And Vinny Del Negro, Clippers coach, appears to be on his way out.

Derek Fisher *did* get fined $5K for that ‘double flop’ against the Rockets (Video) (Ball Don't Lie)

Hey, remember when Houston Rockets center Omer Asik got called for what appeared to be a pretty dubious offensive foul during the second quarter of Game 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder? Of course you do! (Remember how I tried to change the name "Thabo Sefolosha" to "Kevin Martin" in the post after being informed that I had 100 percent misidentified the second OKC flopper, only to find that the change didn't take in our publishing system, so it seems like it's going to stay wrong and haunt me forever? Of course you don't!)
In the event you've somehow forgotten the play since the Thunder dispatched the Rockets and moved on to a second-round matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies, refresh your memory:

Well, it seems the NBA didn't forget about it, announcing Monday evening that it has fined Thunder guard Derek Fisher $5,000 for violating the league's anti-flopping policy. I'm not entirely sure why it took that long for Stu Jackson and company to mete out their hot brand of discipline, but the delivery of justice, even when delayed, enhances and emboldens us all.

GM Danny Ferry has made it clear he plans to overhaul pretty much everything about the Hawks, from the roster to the organizational culture. And that likely means the coaching staff, too. So while nothing is official, with their season over Larry Drew and his staff in Atlanta are doing some quiet job hunting, reports…

The Atlanta Hawks? Gone till November (Ball Don't Lie)

With every season that ends, for the playoff teams at least, we felt it right to take a look ahead. TNT already has the rights to "Gone Fishin'," and because we're sure that someone, somewhere, still likes that Wyclef song, we're going with "Gone Till November." And, yes, we know the season starts in October. Today? The Atlanta Hawks.
The last time the Atlanta Hawks decided to clean house, its intentions were obvious, and the results were brutal. The team dealt for Al Harrington and traded for Antoine Walker’s expiring contract before the 2004-05 season in an attempt to remain competitive and intriguing to local fans while punting away a season, and that mishmash only gave the Hawk faithful 13 wins out of 82 tries. Atlanta then watched as their league-worst record only allowed the team the second overall pick, a place that saw general manager Billy Knight pass on both Chris Paul and Deron Williams to select Marvin Williams.
In the offseason, the team decided to throw drafts picks (draft picks that were later turned into Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez) Phoenix’s way in order to secure a sign-and-trade deal for Joe Johnson. Johnson was a player that the Hawks could have just signed outright, but Knight wanted to give the scoring swingman Bird Rights-styled money that the Phoenix Suns were not offering him. The move drew a wedge between the team’s warring ownership factions, resulting in a court case, and it still was the second-worst contract Atlanta ever signed Joe Johnson to .

* Change follows first-round ouster * Nets expected more after upgrading roster (Adds details, recasts) May 5 (Reuters) - The Brooklyn Nets will not offer a new contract to interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo, commencing the search for a new coach one day after being eliminated from the playoffs, General Manager Billy King said on Sunday. After spending some $350 million to upgrade their roster for their debut season in Brooklyn, the Nets had loftier expectations than a first-round ouster by the injury-hit Chicago Bulls in a Game Seven on the Nets' new home court. ...

Somehow, the NBA survived its regular season and first round of the postseason with enough players to field eight teams, so we’re just going to go ahead and begin the conference semifinals. The minds behind Ball Don’t Lie are going to preview each second-round series, with Kelly Dwyer going against character for a more genial take, Dan Devine bringing his inimitable mixture of both order and bedlam, along with Eric Freeman’s legendary look inside the reputations of some of the series’ key fixtures.
We begin with the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers.
Which team do you think will win the series, and in how many games? Vote here to let us know what you think.
