Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will have surgery on Monday to repair the stress fracture in his left foot, a decision he reached after several days of meeting with specialists to review his options.

The surgery at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center will be performed by Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton and will repair the stress fracture in the tarsal navicular bone in Yao's left foot. Clanton will insert several screws into the bone to help heal and support the microscopic cracks that have developed.

Clanton estimated it will take three to four months for the injury to heal and for Yao to begin rehabilitation. That would allow Yao to return to competition in time for the start of the Summer Olympic Games on Aug. 8 in Beijing.

it goes to show how behind china is on human rights, they claim they "own" yao, so he will need to fulfill his obligation to his country, well yao needs to tell them to go pound sand, his health comes first and second he is not owned by anyone.i know there is alot of honor in china but with his admiration of the chinese people i am sure if he said this is wrong he might get people to change how things are run over there.

this has nothing to do with human rights. you americans just don't have nationalistic patrotism. and this to show why usa has not won a major tournament in recent year despite having the most talented players. playing for your country at home is a honour worth dying for. first of all, yao is a chinese player, he will sacrifice anything for his country. playing for your country is like fighting for your dignity and self respect. you americans will never get it...

Secondly, the Rockets will never be as important as the Chinese National Team, Rockets is a club team, how in the world would it ever be more imporant than CNT? Don't say Rockets pay Yao millions of dollars or he is obliged to play, China raised and fed Yao, and gave him the opportunity to play in the west and enhance his career. You Americans really need to learn about what true humanity is.

If China is so good then why give "him the opportunity to play in the west" and "enhance his career." Are you saying that he would not be able to enhance his career in China? Why is that? Does he have to leave his country to have a career?

funny how a simple matter of an injured foot can inflate into a discussion of human rights and nationalism. Truth is, the olympics are not going to be in Beijing again during Yao's lifetime, im sure playing for his country, in front of most of his fan base is a little more important to him than making sure the rockets get to the playoffs to lose in the first round AGAIN! the boy's going to be paid whether he plays or not, the only difference is, China might actually stand a chance at winning.

What doesnt sound right? If you check the calendar you will see that today is March 3,2008 (Yao will have surgery today), he needs full 4 months to recover, which is until July 3, Olympics are on Aug 8 which is more then enough for Yao to get back in shape and play for China National Team. Respect to Yao and his will to play for China! He's the pride of Chinese sport.

Let's just hope Yao can get healthy and that he will not have these type of injuries every season.
The Rockets are playing good and still winning.
