Kobe Bryant

It loomed as the biggest defensive question. How were the Celtics going to handle Kobe Bryant, the NBA's most prolific scorer? The approach seemed simple enough. When one man isn't enough, throw two or three at him. The Celtics used a little bit of everyone to challenge Bryant last night as Paul Pierce, James Posey, and Ray Allen all took the assignment of guarding the Lakers star during a 98-88 victory in Game 1 at TD Banknorth Garden.

Bryant may have been crowded most of the night, but he still managed 24 points on 9-of-26 shooting from the field. He was 6 for 6 from the free throw line and 0 for 3 from 3-point range. Lakers coach Phil Jackson thought Bryant believed he was shooting the ball well, but many of those shots were just rimming out. Pierce said the Celtics were more interested in keeping Bryant guessing. Posey could be effective with his long, 6-foot-8-inch frame, Pierce could challenge Bryant by being physical, and Allen represented a combination of both traits.

"I just wanted to make him work, and that's what we tried to do," Pierce said. "We threw numerous defenders at him, and we just gave him a different look. We're all different types of defenders . . . We wanted to give him different looks and keep him uncomfortable . . . We just tried to stay in front of him as much as you can, and that's what we were able to do."

When Bryant thought he was alone, the white shirts swarmed in and he was forced to pass; he tied Derek Fisher for the team lead with six assists. If it wasn't one of the aforementioned three standing in his way, it was Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, or P.J. Brown who kept Bryant from cruising to the basket.

whats a game last night..I don't care what any one says Paul Pierce is the toughest S.O.B in the NBA, remember when he got his teeth knocked out, he went back to the locker room yanked a tooth and pasted the rest and went out to score 24 pts in the 2nd half....he is a Beast the defense was ferocious Ray Allen looked like jesus shuttlesworth, and KG had a bad 2nd half and we still won
    what a great game

I think kobe should not depend to his athletic skills alone but also to his intelligence to the game. This what great players are made off. He knew double or sometimes triple team would always hounded him but still he never realized that the two of his team mates were open. In this situation he should create play to other team mates rather than shooting in front of the triple team. Lets say if he can wake up and realize the truth!

Kobe-me is not as good as Jordan. Just like Jordan was never as good as Larry Bird. Guards that don't average a double-double over a full season, or their careers, or even over a playoff series, are too
one dimensional to be considered among the best ever.
Volume shooters are a dime a dozen. See Jordan, Kobe-me, Iverson, Arenas, Lebron etc. Larry Bird twice led the Celtics to championships, by leading the Celtics in scoring, rebounding, assists, & steals in every
playoff series, including the FINALS. Let me know when KG or Pierce do the same for the Celtics. Or Kobe-me does the same for the Lakers. Until they do, they are just Larry Legend wannabes.

Boston was suppose to win at least one at home, duh!!!
Lakers in 5 or 6!!! and refs need to be more consistent, either make the calls or don't... but don't keep everyone guessing. Phil is a mastermind and will know how to plan accordingly.

Fakers are done! Im gonna love seeing another LA kid take one away from that fake as Kobe Bryant and the Fakers! Remember Prince in 04' now its Pierce's turn! Should have never resigned that selfish SG.. Hope he's a cancer and a curse the the Fakers organization. He got what he came for another individual accolade. If you guys can't tell he takes those bad shots, and dribbles the shot clock down so he can show off how much talent he has.. Thats his weakness his EGO!
IM OUT LIKE THE FAKERS CHANCES ON WINNING THE FINALS! PEACE!

Kobe didnt get to the line because he is afraid to drive the lane with KG and PJ waiting for him lol The Celts had to deal with Lebron and his supporting cast is about the same as LA has....KG ate Gasol up, what a miss-match that is, LA aint going anywhere

I'm a Celtic fan. On the other hand, Bryant missed a large amount of open shots and what would typically be "gimmes" (according to what he typically makes) in the first half. Garnett did the exact same thing in the second. Amazingly, though, everyone is crediting Pierce and Posey before they do Allen. The guy was the only Celtic who came out of the gates with his hands up. It is absolutely disappointing that the only time the man touches the ball is when it happens to fall in his hands with 5 seconds left on the shot clock or when he jumps up and down screaming for his open look. Offensively, this Celtic team is a joke. This won't be a dynasty. You had one year and you STILL can't work a third of the big three into your offense.

Call it what you want but it wasn't good defense. Thats like saying they had good defense on Lebron james. Theres a big difference then having good defense over players just missing shots. Lakers had shots they could make but missed them. However Unlike other teams the celtics have faced like the Lebron James's or the HAWKS! The lakers have the best coach in the game. Best player and players who know how to get out of shooting funks. Kobe has had struggles in previous games and has come back each time stronger. Allen, Pierce and garnett and all continually struggled especially allen and pierce. Pierce has recently found his touch but 2 game 7's shows they have a hard time getting out of that.
Lakers on the other hand don't have a problem. in foul trouble and not shooting well. Vujacic only shot 3 3-pointers! I mean come on! him only shooting 3? He might be sick or have the flu! Fisher also was the hot hand and stopped taking shots in the second.
Either way the lakers and the celtics were in a size up game. Getting to know each other. The lakers are the cavs or hawks. Kobe is not Lebron James (thank god). If the celtics game plan is to hope they're opponent misses shots like last game they are gona be in for a shock. No one who has a game plan of kobe going 9-26 is gona win a series.

thats all good and well Nick, but um...they lost, Phil Jackson had no answer to it, it wasnt any different than the other 2 times the Celts beat LA, why do you think it should be different, Gasol? LMAO, KG schooled Gasol....oh yeah, the teams that took the Celts to 7 games beat LA 3games to 1, so your team had a tough time with them also, and Detroit was better than LA, all LA has is Bryant who is a good player, and Gasol who is just overrated, and Fisher who is just as average as Rondo is, get over yourselves LA

think Kobe was forcing too many shots in game 1 instead of letting the game come to him as he did against us (the Spurs). I wish he played like that against us!!!
MJ, especially in his later years with the Bulls used to involve his teamates for 3 quarters, then take over in the 4th. Kobe needs to be more patient.
