Whether the San Antonio Spurs will be active or inert in the trade market remains to be seen. While there's no need for Tim Duncan to put his house on the market, it's safe to say the Spurs haven't ruled themselves out of trade discussions.

"We talk to everybody just like all other 29 teams," Popovich said. "If something comes along and it makes sense for us, we'll do it."

That's a big if. The Spurs have most of their money tied up in three players they have no interest in moving — Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Their best bargaining chip, Brent Barry (who has an expiring contract worth about $5.5 million), is injured.

Oh, so if the Spurs trade an expiring contract to another team who just wants to open cap in the summer, it's understandable, but when the Lakers traded Kwame's bigger expiring contract so the Grizzlies can open cap space, Pop doesn't "understand the trade?" He basically answered his own question.
Hey Pop, this is why the Grizzlies traded Gasol for Kwame. Because Kwame had a large expiring contract. Memphis wants to start from scratch and get into free agency. Do you see the light now? If not, consult Jedi Robinson. Pfft....

you guys are freaks, if you think that was an even trade then you need your head examined. i don't care who had what expiring contract you gave up an all star for nothing more than bench players. the lakers made a steal, good on them, but i rest with my original statement.

Afraid of the Lakers? 3 of the past 5 NBA Titles vs. First round casualties that haven't proven anything. OK

Look, most fantasy league GMs would have blocked that trade. Memphis gave up a budding STAR that you would want to build a team around versus strating from scratch.
It was a great trade for the Lakers, no question about that.
On topic, the Spurs really have nothing to dangle out there. Moreover, I don't see any available players out there that could truly make them better.

Anthony F...don't forget ..they also got a first round draft choice and Javaris Crittendon. Javaris, a first round draft pick, is very athletic and will be a good player in a few years. Although that still is not enough for Gasol, it is not nearly as bad as people are saying.

The Lakers-Grizzlies trade was never about exchanging value for value. The Grizzlies organization wanted to rebuild and needed to free up as much cap space as possible so they can be an active player in the free agent market this summer. And Kwame's was the largest available expiring contract, hence they dealt Gasol.
Getting those first round picks wouldn't hurt either since they ARE in a rebuilding process.
If the Grizzlies needed value-for-value and if they weren't looking to rebuild, Gasol would have been the last guy on the trading block for them!!
Besides, there were news that the Memphis locals weren't too keen on Gasol anymore being the face of the franchise anymore, so it was more or less a 'mutual seperation' of sorts.

I think popovich is a sour loser. In the NBA any team can make any trade they want. A trade committee? Does he want to mandate what other teams player needs? Who they want to trade? What position they want to get? What's next? What about a coach committee to oversee whos who to coach a team? What about a GM committee?

Horry, Vaugn, Elson, Bowen, & Finley, do nothing but take up space. They contribute nothing to the Spurs. Bowen played 30.5 minutes & scored 3 points & had Zero rebounds, zero assists, zero steals & zero blocks in his last game. This is his stat line game in & game out. He never holds any opponent to numbers as low as his. The others often play 70-80 minutes & don't put up the #'s of one decent starter.
Duncan, Ginobli & Parker have to carry the 5 dogs listed on their backs. Any young players with some energy would be upgrades. There are 20 d-league players that would be of more help.

Unbiased-Fan, Bowen has won numerous games for the spurs because of his impact on the other team's lead scorer. Granted he doesn't hold them down every night but ask LeBron how valuable Bowen is?
Only so many people can take the shots in each game. With Ginobili, Parker, and Duncan on the team, you are looking for the rest of the guys on the floor to just keep the other team honest. Finley fits this mold very well...his 3-pt dagger won a game (Phoenix I think it was) the other day when they sagged off of him to cover the Spurs "stars".
The five you mention are clearly "the other guys" on the team and so you can't reasonably expect to trade them for a top-tier starter anyway...unless MEMPHIS has any guys left?

Shaq may no longer be with the Lakers, but the 2 young centers who replaced him will more than make up for the 'loss'. We'll see how all of this turns out during the playoffs. The Spurs definitely have their work cut out for them if they want to retain their Championship.
I don't even think the Spurs will get past the 2nd round. I'm anticipating a Lakers-Suns WCF!!! That should be brutal to say the least!!

I say trade Brent Barry to the Warriors. They can use a former legend's son on the team who also can open up the middle and inside with his 3 point abilities. And the Spurs can get an athletic Pietrus and a big like O'Bryant. It works out cap wise too.

Its just like POP said, "If something looks good". There will be no block buster trade with the Spurs. Everyone else, including the Lakers are scrambling to make moves so they can catch up to the defending champs. Spurs will win again the way the always have, by physical no nonsense play in the playoffs!! NUF SAID...

Pop is doing exactly what he should be doing. Play it cool, and don't panic. The Spurs are in a good position to make another run in the playoffs. A division title would be great, but it's not the real goal of any Popovich team. If there's a trade out there that makes sense, he'll do it. If not, he'll get his team into the playofffs as healthy as possible and run with it. The playoffs are where a veteran team comes together every year.
