Rubio offered six-year deal in Spain?

“RickyMinnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn has got to be annoyed with his No. 1 draft pick right about now. Kahn has visited Spain at least twice this summer to try and help Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio(notes) see the light of why he should come to Minnesota. Kahn supposedly tried to help figure out a way for Rubio to get a slew of endorsements in Minnesota in order to help buy out Rubio's massive contract with DKV Joventut. Now the word is that Rubio is just might stay in Europe, anyway, and another Spanish team is possibly going to sign the youngster to a six-year deal, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Rubio apparently has an offer of a six-year deal with Regal Barcelona that will have the new team paying out the largest buyout in European basketball history: $5.3 million.

There are two things that Kahn can at least smile about right now if this deal goes through: It isn't a done deal, according to Yahoo! Sports, and it does supposedly include a clause that could let Rubio come to the NBA in 2011.

But don't hold your breath, David.

I think he's scared of Brandon Jennings comment about him, I think he's scared that he actually has to prove himself against grown ass men that are more physically gifted than him.
Now everyone who questioned Kahn's pick of Flynn should question no more.
If Flynn emerges in a couple of years Minnesota will still have the rights to Rubio, plus they'll have an established 1 that could be used as trade bait to get a piece that they need. My guess is that Rubio will not be over here until 2011 like the article mentioned.

Just gets worse and worse for the Wolves. They so messed up their draft as it was. Now, their #1 guy is more likely to play in Europe for the next 2-3 seasons, minimum. I am a big fan of Jonny Flynn and have said that I think he will have a better NBA career than Rubio, but now, who knows if/when Rubio will ever play in the NBA. My theory is he will play in Europe for a few years, he has no interest in playing in Minnesota, and will sign on with a different team in a bigger market once his rights run out with the Wolves. I still think this kid is as overrated and overhyped as Kwame and Olaowkandi. He needs to greatly improve his all around game, and playing in Europe seems like the best option for him at this point, especially since the people around him have all but convinced him that playing in the NBA now, especially in Minnesota, is not the right move for him.

Rubio sucks! Maybe he can see what Minnesota still cannot see: that he cannot compete at the NBA level. I've seen highlights of him and I am not impressed. He is one hard foul away from being out for the season. He's a wuss.

Leave it to the T-Wolves to screw up a top pick. Did they not consider all this nonsense before they made the pick. Hard to believe they wouldn't use some caution while trying to build a future. Oh wait, there is no future for this franchise. Frustrating to say the least!

Freddie Joe Bob- why the h.ell do you leave comments know not a single living person can decipher that garbage language you try and talk. Didn't your mother ever tell you how to pronunciate words or spell the words. its not hard man its the english language. learn it. you will get a lot farther in lifet than that street corner your currently working out.
another reason why the nba should make it a rule that european players cannot have a contract with ANY team. they must be free and clear like their college conterparts in the U.S. I don't know why NBA teams constantly draft players that are currently contracted for another league. sounds just plain dumb.

Stupidity still reins high in the NBA world. The guy supposedly has a buyout at $8million or two years on his contract. Why come to the states and play for nothing. Clearly the guy can play over seas, no big loss he can pay off his debt and make some cash doing it. If he signs a 6 year deal then chances are he's just not gonna make it soon to the NBA, Let him play out his current contract and go from there. His old contract says two years. Signing a six year deal just sounds iffy and smells like something dead in the water. Timberwolves should have read the fine print before they made him their top draft choice.

Rubio is the real deal. He was the best PG prospect in the draft, and probably the best overall player. Griffin played in front of all of us, Rubio didn't.
Let's not forget Rubio held more than his own against the greatest basketball team ever assembled in the Olympics with an injured shooting hand.
He's a headache, but when he gets his ass over here, he'll develop into a top 5 PG. Not to mention whoever gets him now has a larger following in Spain, including games being broadcast in Spain and merchandise sales, off-season exhibition tours, etc. The Rockets and Lakers are huge internationally because of Yao and Pau. There's no denying these players eventually make more for the team's than they're paid.

I just don't understand the thought process behind the buyout rules in the NBA.
If the Timberwolves wanna pay the buyout why wouldn't you let them? I guess that would favor large market cities that can more easily afford to fork over 5-10 mil, but so what? Large market cities already have advantages (you see any free agents coming to Minnesota?).
The best talent in the world not playing in the NBA are gonna have large buyout clauses. Why is the NBA making it unrealistic for those players to come play here?
    So stupid.
And I read some report saying local businesses had offered up about 600,000 in endorsement deals... great. so he can just eat the other 7 mil? What are these people thinking? Change the rules. If the Wolvies want him that bad, let them pay!!!
