NBA - Sports Rumors

Jose Calderon

Toronto Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo admitted Tuesday that more teams around the NBA inquired about acquiring point guard Jose Calderon more than any other player on the Toronto roster during this past off-season, meaning that it will be particularly difficult to keep him. But Colangelo believes he can.

A free agent after the season, Toronto may have to pay starters money for the back-up to T.J. Ford. Colangelo is optimistic that he can keep Calderon in Raptor red next year despite the fact that the cost may be prohibitive. The Raptors will pay Ford $8 million next season and if Calderon has another good year in Toronto, he could be looking for close to $5 million per year.

if they could get an interior defender for him, i hope they would. rasho sucks and they have decent depth at guard. for them to compete in the east, they need someone to take hard fouls and bully guys off the block.

Tom makes a good point. But Jose is the best backup for Ford off the bench, and plays very well too. I have faith in Colangelo. In Colangelo Toronto trusts.

hey should get good money, he is a solid back-up who could start for a few teams..... however, if he waits out on a deal for big money you know the knicks will over pay him next season.

They need to make a decision on who they want and trade the other one for a player that will make them a top 4 team in the east... the time to win is now

If so many teams are asking about him, go ahead trade him for a scorer to help out Bosh on the scoreboard and a draft pick for next year (either 1st round or 2nd round in consecutive years). Then, just pickup or trade for one of Houston's. They have 4 last that I counted and you only going to keep at worst case 3 (3rd has to be combo guard). Trade him while his stock is so high.

"Raptors ***my need*** $5 million to keep Calderon"
Wow these rumors are getting so bad they don't even proofread!
Jose Calderon, the best backup pure passer PG in the NBA, is easily worth $5M.

$5M? That's so cheap, he worths at least 6M! Keep him for sure.
No way we are going to trade Jose. For a scorer? You know, we have Bargnani develops to Dirk. We just have to give him some time.
Btw, I bet you Cavs will ask desperately for Calderon. Trust me, they need someone that can pass and create space for LBJ.

smart. play the wait-and-see game. if tj goes down due to injury (how many times would that be now?), or, if jc somehow outplays tj by being the kind of pass first, shoot second pg that people seem to think that tj is, then by all means, do whatever it takes to re-sign him. maybe even consider trading tj instead. but, if jc has peaked, then it would be easier to judge his $$$ value.

#4 If Calderon went to the Celtics I would through up because then they would be unstoppable and I want the Pistons to still be able to beat them. Toronto would never do it!

The Raptors don't have a Steve Nash or Dwayne Wade, a guy that can handle the ball and the entire offense all game. The combination of the two (T.J and Jose) allows for the Raptors to send out different line-up combinations that are tough to match up against, because their style is so different. There is no need to trade Jose for a another scorer, and there is no need to trade Rasho, he is consistent, never awful, never amazing. Thats all you can ask for from a 7 foot serbian who can't jump. And the time to win is now? 80% of our team is under the age 0f 25, we have lots of time to let Jose, Andrea, Joey G, Humph and even CB4 mature and improve. This is the start of something great in Toronto. We are young, we are athletic and we can run. Those are ingredents for success in the NBA, and Jose Calderon is the perfect spice to this recipe.

Calderon shot 52% from the field last year and averaged 5 assists per OFF THE BENCH. He needs to start somewhere! All around better than Ford

Yes, I'm hoping the cavs can scoop this guy up. He is a terrific player. But if not, he's great where he is now, however I think he should be the starter and let TJ Ford come off the bench.

Calderon is the shiz. Dump Ford and star Jose, then use the cap space to get another piece to help the Raps go all the way.

First off he is worth the money and no don't trade him we need to keep him. When TJ gets hurt who do you have to handle the ball? Dixon? Yikes. One of the big reasons the raptors won the East and made the playoffs was because of when Ford got hurt Raptors were not any worse team because Calderon could be a starter on many teams, also when one of them was having an off day they could put the other guys. Also without Calderon you do not have the productive bench like last year.
So yes he is worth the money and no don't sacrifice our offense for one defensive player.
