"Frank, an assistant with the Boston Celtics, separated his candidacy in his first meetings with management and ownership, distancing himself from contenders Mike Woodson and Kelvin Sampson," Wojnarowski writes.
Frank got two important recommendations along the way, Wojnarowski notes: Philadelphia 76ers president Rod Thorn, who used to be Frank's boss when they were both with the New Jersey Nets, and Celtics coach Doc Rivers.
Frank has been putting together a possible coaching staff for the last two weeks, Wojnarowski notes.
Other folks who interviewed for the gig in Motor City include Woodson, Sampson, Bill Laimbeer and Patrick Ewing.
