Understand what the Detroit Pistons are asking Allen Iverson to do runs counter to just about everything that's made him the third-highest scorer, per game, in NBA history. Understand, too, he wants very badly to be the player the Pistons are asking him to be, according to the Detroit News.

"I am just in a better situation now, for me," he said. "Hopefully I get the chance to compete for a championship. That's what it's about for me."

Just listening to him talk after practice Thursday, though, you could sense how genuinely conflicted he is right now.

In one breath he said, "It's different. I am not called upon to score as I was throughout my career. It's just a different experience for me."

Or, "I am used to leading the league in minutes every year. This is just something I have to adjust to."

Then in the next breath he said, "But it's easier for me, and hopefully it will allow me to be a lot stronger at the end of the year. It's different, but I won't have any problems adjusting to it."

The 76ers, whom the Pistons host tonight, might not completely recognize this version of the Answer, the player who was the face of their franchise from 1996-2007. Instead of dominating the ball and scoring close to 30 points a game, he's playing off the ball and scoring close to 20.

"He's still the same guy," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "He's still able to dominate the game. But we're not asking him to dominate games like that every night. We aren't asking him to play 45 minutes or take 25 shots a game, so he's not going to have the same numbers. But he still has the same kind of impact on the game in terms of putting pressure on the opposing defense."

    JDD:
He has always been a selfish player. I was watching Denver play the Spurs last night and I thought to myself - No wonder the trade went down with AI and Billups. That entire group is selfish especially Melo and with Melo and AI - it's like mixing water and oil! Doesn't mix well!

Finally people are beginning to notice how good Chauncey Billups really is. That being said in the long run it will probably end up being a good deal for both.

Thank you Pistons for givin up billups hes working miricales in Denver but asking A.I to score less is asking to much. He relies to much on stats hes think that to win a game he needs to socre atleast 30 not. The ending score for the team for him doesnt matter just his score lol

wow. step off the ledge piston fans. this trade was never about this year. any benefit for this year is gravy. It's all about 2 things: 1. salary cap. we get like 30 mil at the end of the year and in the next two years there are a number of young talented players we can go after. 2. youth. I know that doesn't seem to make sense since AI is older than Billups but again it's not about this year. long term we're getting old as a team, we need young stars, young legs if we're going to be great in 3,4 or 5 years. Billups is a great player and I love him for all he did here in Detroit but like Big Ben he's getting older and we need to be paying kids that'll play for us for 5 years not older stars who are declining. I'll say it again and again: this is about the future not about AI vs Billups.
P.S. back off Joes draft picks. He's a great drafter, he just missed on 1 pick. look at all the rest and you'll see a pattern of picking great talent with low picks!

melo and AI got along great, take your quack-box cracker-jack psycho-analysis to the curb.
AI, like all great scorers, knows what he can do and what he can't do. You all just get pissed because he wants to do the things he is best at, which is what really helps a team.
If this trade doesn't work its not AI's fault. They just admitted, both dumars and iverson, that he is being asked to do things he has never done.
Why would you trade for a player who has to drastically alter his style to fit your team? That is on Dumars, not AI.

This shows you how Pistons fan like me deeply miss Chauncey w/ his unselfishness and leadership that made Detroit a formidable team in the league throughout the yrs., I think Joe D really made a big time mistake this time by trading Chauncey away to Denver ...

AI is reading comments from guys like you and getting ready to unleash his anger on the world come playoff time. He loves to score points, but even more than that, he loves to prove the haters wrong. That's why I love him. Because he's going to everything he can to prove the Haters wrong. EVERYTHING. He'll run until he's dead. That's why the pistons have a chance at the title this year. Because no one wants to prove the haters wrong as much as Allen Iverson does, and he knows the only real way he can do that is by winning a ring. He'll probably wear it on his middle finger so he can show it to all the haters... So hate away. It only makes AI stronger. He'll defy gravity size and age, he'll even defy himself. But he won't stop trying.
Keep Going AI. We still believe.

i agree with #13 the trade was really with the future in mind. any benefit they'd get from this trade was would be only be a plus. but i hope that in the meantime they just bring AI of the bench like some teams do to players who have a scorer's mindset. let stuckey start. he'll never really develop until he gets his hands dirty. he might make some mistakes running the offense but sometimes that how u learn. as for denver i happy 4 them. i think billups is bringing the best in his teammates especially nene. his game really blossomed since the trade.

AI needs to go back to Philly cause they can't get any scoring from anyone consistantly. I think AI, Brand, And Igi would be a decent big three. Plus AI should finish his career in Philly. He will use a sixers jersey when he is inducted to the hall of fame for sho.

I also appreciate AI's attitude. he could be whining about being asked to do things he'd never been asked to do but instead he's excited about learning and doing his best to find his role on this team. for all his previous faults he seems to be doing his best to fit in and be a team player here. That speaks to a maturity on his part. give it a month and they'll be playing well again. we've sen flashes of what they can be, just not the consistency that we've seen in the past. (which only comes from having played together for so long.)
