Pierce not committing to Celtics option yet

“PaulIt seems like a no-brainer that Paul Pierce(notes) will be playing for the Boston Celtics next season. After all, he only has to say yes to an option that would let him make about $21.5 million for one year's work after the $19.8 million he's bringing in for himself this year. But Pierce isn't ready to commit for next year, according to the Boston Herald.

"I don't know yet," he told the paper. "Maybe I might leave my options open. Hey, what if they trade Kevin (Garnett) and Ray (Allen) and Rasheed (Wallace) away?." The chances of such trades are obviously nonexistent, but Pierce may be waiting to see if a long-term deal appears before next summer from the the Celtics or another team that could bring some financial stability for many years to come.

Head Coach Doc Rivers fully expects Pierece to sign on for next year.

    If Boston loses to either cleveland or Orlando peirce will not sign for another year !!!! This is the last year the old celtics have to win it all and peirce knows this or else he would have signed already ! After you win a championship its all about the money!! Just ask Trevor Ariza !!

    But what if they tradeplayers away, i can't lead a team. Pierce is worthless. It's Garnetts team, who is also worthless for selling out and not playing hard on the Timberwolves. Oh wait, whose team is it? Lakers will doiminate them.

He just was a 11 time all star...And who would want to be on a team that will not build...Ask cry baby kobe....trade me or trade shaq...Loser...The lakers still have alot of work to do to win any thing..And even if they win it all this year they are still only the second best team...behind Boston.....Get you game up kack...

    Even as a Celtics fan, this story is a complete non-issue and just flat out stupid. 2 weeks from today, the new season officially starts. Who gives a sh*t about what happens next seaon yet!! This friggin season has even started yet!! The only thing I'd like to have done before 10/31 is getting Rondo's extension done, which the wheels are turning on and looks good to be done before the 10/31 deadline. LET'S GO CELTICS!!!!

    Celtics v.s. Lakers 2010 NBA Finals!! Great rivalry in pro sports!! Both teams looking good for the upcoming season and look destined for Finals matchup #12. Sux we have to wait until Jan. 31 for the 1st regular season game, but the next one after that is Feb. 18.

    Making a story out of nothing here. He said that in jest, he's always said he wants to retire a Celtic.
    He MAY end up being one of the most revered Celtics of all time, especially if he plays another 4-5+ years, he'll have a ton of records that will stand up for a long long time.

    The reason Paul is really leaving his options open, is that if something crazy does happen with management he'll have an out, and also if Management comes to paul this off-season and says, we want to resign Rondo and bring in Wade, plus resign ray Allen to be our sixth man, Paul will say, OK sign me up for another five years at 13mil and you'll have the money to do all that. He's thinking like Tom Brady always does for the Pats. As long as the team is getting better, he'll be willing to sacrafice.

    I might be a traditionalist (and Englsh) but I do not care whether the Celtics are competitive next season or who does or does not get traded. Paul Pierce is the captain of the most storied franchise in professional basketball and being paid a fortune to represent them. Unless the reason for leaving the Celtics were personal/family orientated, leaving the C's in his case would be disrespectful. If he is a true Celtic, he should believe switching to any other NBA team is a downward career move. As a Celtic fan who travels from England every year to watch them, I would rather play for a poor Celtics team than any other.
    I believe the NBA to be a business but there are exceptions. Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics should be one of those exceptions.

    Note to Paul: not likely to earn 21.5M in today's market as free agent. Take the option ASAP to protect yourself and lock in your $$$$.
