Shaquille O'Neal suffered through a hip injury that eventually caused him to sit out several Miami Heat games, including the last seven before he was traded to the Phoenix Suns. Since making what appears to be a miraculous recovery with the Suns, O'Neal has credited Phoenix's training staff for the innovative methods that have allowed him to get in proper condition.

'When I came out here, these guys just said, `We can fix you up. We're going to make you feel like you're 20,' '' O'Neal said. ``And they do stuff I've never seen before. No shots, no [electric stimulation], no ice. All they do is just touch you and work on the stuff.''

Although that might be true, the fact is the Heat spent exhaustive resources trying to help O'Neal. The team invested in an expensive blood circulation machine that he barely used, a high-altitude training room — and considered installing another one in his home — and Alter-G treadmills that lessen the burden on the lower body while running. The Heat also hired two of the more reputable physical trainers in South Florida to work with O'Neal. The staff attempted to convince O'Neal to try methods now being used by the Suns' trainers, but he was hardly cooperative.

No doubt the big man could have put forth a little (okay, a lot) more effort towards rehabbing his body and getting on the floor to help the Heat. The truth is, though, this guy is no dummy. His lack of effort in the rehab department coupled with an obvious desire to be moved to a contender is exactly what was needed to get him out of Miami. Had he worked hard the Heat would be a 500 team and on their way to a 2nd round playoff loss. They would have been out of the lottery and no closer to rebuilding than when the season started. The Heat need to: #1- resign Marrion (Just stroke the mamas boy's ego a bit and he will stay-This one might be tough, however) #2- Wade comes back healthy #3-Pull off a trade or two for some unselfish role players (AKA the Celtics-This one is very doable. Just don't resign Gary Payton---PLEASE) #4- Do well in the draft. If they can do all of these things and they are all within their reach the Heat would at the very least be an Eastern Division contender next year. That would not be the case had Shaq been on the floor this year. Miami fans need to get over it. Shaq came and delivered a title (Wade was the key but it doesn't happen without Shaq). By opting to tank it he has put them on a much quicker path to being the great tyeam they can be.

By the way heat1234, dont call the big man a jerk, and Michael you's is filtered... He delivered what he promised. Miami got there championship. Fact is no other super star that has played on more than one team has brought their team to the NBA finals. About geting hurt on company time.. if you get injured at work you company is expected to foot the bill until you recover,

James C offers up some good insight on the Heat's future and Chris M says in one sentence what many of us spend twenty minutes at the water cooler commiserating about with our fellow workers. One question though: Isn't Gary Payton already encased in wax at the Smithsonian?

Shaq is just a big lazy player who's time in the league is about over thank God. I believe that his work ethic is what hurt the Heat the most and I'm glad to see him move on (AGAIN!)

That old man is probably going to have about 5 or seven rings before he croak and retire. When he finally gets tired of the Suns, he'll probably go somewhere else. Repeat.

I'm a Laker Fun but I think the Lakers has the worst training staff in the NBA!!! Lakers should hire those trainers for their injured problematic players.

Shaq helped bring 3 rings back to LA so I cant trash him too much, But when he does not want to play anymore or when he does not want to take responsibility for a losing team he conviently gets "injured", then he goes to Phoenix and he is running up and down the court with no problem? He loves taking credit and none of the blame, sorry superstar, it does not work that way.
I also love that he names himself "MDE" Most Dominant Ever, please! Here is a trivia question for all you Shaq lovers: How many times has "The MDE" lead the league in either Blocks or Rebounds and how many defensive player of the year awards has he won?? How many times has he been names to the NBA Frist Team All-Defense?
The answer to all the questions above is: Zero! Zilch! None! Not once!
    Nice defesive record there "MDE"

This is just Shaq's MO. He did the same thing when he went from the Lakers to the Heat. The Lakers were on Shaq to lose weight and he just wouldn't do it. Day one with the Heat? Lean and mean.

I rarely comment on these things but it amazed me that someone compared Robert Horry to Shaq. Role players bounce around a lot-- you need them for champion teams. Role players often win rings on multiple teams simply because champion teams need them. It's superstars that have trouble getting championships on multiple teams-- in any game, basketball, football, hockey, etc. It's not impossible but it's certainly tough for a superstar to do so in basketball especially. So much is invested to get a superstar sometimes the supporting cast is too hard to provide.
As far as Shaq, a lot of healing depends on emotions. If you're feeling beat down, you're not going to heal as fast as if you're feeling optimistic about the future. It works that way for everyone much less basketball players--their physical ability often is enhanced by raw emotion. So I can believe the rumor is true. Miami isn't playing to win and that tears at a player. It's like playing for the Knicks. You need hope.
Shaq may not be the MDE but for the center position-- teams have always had to adapt with him clogging the middle. His game has always changed the way a team approaches a game and still does to this day. Kobe and Shaq can't really be compared. Both are superstars but Kobe is much younger than Shaq. Can't expect a parity of skill at this point.

    And also he's a coward..
if he was to form a partnership with another dynamic player on a team.. just like with Kobe and Wade..
When bad times happen.. he eventually walks away..he's always the first to leave!
Shaq you gotta face reailty you mofo! If your team goes down you gotta down with them! Now that's a team player!

shaq won't win a championship this season or even next season, because the suns window is now closed. there are too many teams who can beat them in a 7 game series; the hornets, the spurs, the lakers, even the jazz (maybe) can all beat them. so heat fans enjoy the post season. no, you won't see the heat in the playoffs, but you'll see something better, the suns getting slaughtered.
