Marbury, Knicks open buyout talks

Exiled Stephon Marbury met with New York Knick president Donnie Walsh at the team's Westchester headquarters for 45 minutes Thursday, and the sides held preliminary discussions about a buyout, two sources told The New York Post. Marbury, who has no agent, was joined by Players Association attorney Hal Biagas.

The ball is now rolling for a Marbury-Knick divorce. A team source said an official breakup could happen in one week. According to a source, Marbury asked Walsh for permission to talk with other clubs, and Walsh is expected to grant that wish soon. Walsh may request that Marbury agree not to sign with an Eastern Conference team.

Marbury will be on the bench Friday night in street clothes when the Knicks host Oklahoma City (7:30 p.m., MSG, WEPN-1050 AM).

It will be Marbury's eighth straight "inactive" after a DNP in the opener. Walsh has refused to waive Marbury, though coach Mike D'Antoni will not use him.

It's a decision the coach can start to justify considering the Knicks' successful 5-3 start following their 132-point explosion in Memphis on Wednesday.

Marbury is a talented ball player, but he will be a burden to any team that is brave enough to take him. As long as he don't go to the lakers, who cares where he plays? With so many great story lines in the NBA why is anybody concentrating on this has been?

Steph, go to Boston!!!! Don't let them tell you where to play, you should stick to your guns. Mark Jackson is the answer, not those 2 classful fools

Looks like it took just two weeks for Marbury to realize that D'Antoni would not play him even if the Knicks were 2-15. So Walsh/D'Antoni will win this game of "chicken." But Marbury will have the consolation of getting about 85 percent of his $21 million for just going away. Not that I am complaining. Better this than doing what Isaiah would have done - trading him for two other overpaid guys - with four year contracts. At least this way the Knicks get closer to being under the cap. Maybe now Marbury can get fulfill his dream of playing in Italy!!

Like I said in my previous posts about Steph Marbury the only respectable move that he can undertake in a situation like this is to yield and compromise, you have nothing to loss but everything to gain. First you will be paid millions (lesser than 19.8 million) say 15 or 10 just to close the deal. Honor your commitment that you will not seek transfer within the East. org.
Practice in seclusion for six (6) months and learn the new tricks, upon your return accept a low salary and play for any team of the West . Once you prove yourself that you can still be a franchise player then behave until you retire.
    LAL all the way!!!!!!!!!!

The Knicks brass is the problem, I hate what is going on with Steph, its an abuse of power, those classless fools should be kicked out of my beloved NY. We need to support Steph in his struggles to overcome the way he is being treated and not be restricted in his choices. Mark Jackson can bring back the toughness the Knicks lacks along with some NY pride.

I agree the brass is part of the problem, but please spare us this nonsense suggesting Dinglebury is oppressed. He showed how much he cared about the team and fans when he took the world's longest bereavement leave last year.

there's no team in marbury...maybe he can go to seattle where there is no team at the moment hehe i think ny did the right thing by benching marbury. it would set an example to young guys n show them what would happen if they become a marbury type player.

The problem with the Knicks has long been Dolan and Thomas. Those two are the ones who brought in all the bloated contracts and managed to have the worst team in the NBA with the biggest payroll. Dolan may still be a problem, but at least Walsh and D'antoni have a plan, and the early returns seem good. With the way the East is, there's a decent chance the Knicks could make the playoffs this year.

Buyout makes sense for both sides. Both can move on, and Marbury can sign at a reasonable rate for another team to take him on. Can't see the Knicks trading him at his cap figure, even though it's expiring. Another team will have to give up way too many bodies to make the cap numbers work.
Now Marbury can get paid, sign for minimum with another team, and prove what he has left. Can understand Walsh wanting him the Western Conference, that way he'll only be in NY once during the season.
