NBA - Sports Rumors

Kobe Bryant scored 81 points against Toronto in January 2006, making 28 of 46 shots on the way to the second-highest point total in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point effort in 1962.

It's impossible to imagine it happening this season with such a deep Los Angeles Lakers team, and Coach Phil Jackson suggested it would be better if "81: The Sequel" never took place, going back to last season's NBA Finals to prove a point.

"We know that Boston literally said, 'We've got to take Kobe out, we just have to throw our defense at them,' " Jackson said. "We have to have more guys fit into our offense if we're going to be a team that can compete with those clubs."

Jackson was then asked whether Bryant was happy with his role this season, which has included fewer minutes and lower stats across the board. Jackson began to answer with something akin to "Well, it's a long season," before ribbing a reporter for a brief note in a story touching on the fact that Bryant needed 38 points against Toronto to become the youngest player ever to reach 22,000 points.

"That was like a carrot in front of a donkey, whoever did that," Jackson said with sarcasm. "It was stupid. That could really mess up the game for tonight."

Bryant scored 23 points Sunday against the Raptors, failing to beat Chamberlain to 22,000. Bryant was 30 years and 99 days old Sunday. Chamberlain was 30 years and 100 days when he hit 22,000 in 1966.

At any rate, Jackson said he hoped Bryant would continue to buy into a team-first principle.

this year the Lakers are going to have home court throughout the playoffs and a healthy Bynum and Ariza. title guaranteed. the celtics are the same as last year, minus Posey. thats enough to take the title.

The record's not really that important because it'll only stand for another 5 years. Lebron is so far ahead of the pace that eventually every youngest points record will be his.

guess phil thinks he's the one and only person who sould be taking credit for the lakers' survival from the wreck they were in, and that kobe is just a guy who plays for stats, not the he had to play as if he were the whole team until he actually constructed the current team, shows he aint a show maintainer in boston, i mean where was he seeing the team drowning......but then again, we should look forward for this season

I agree with Dr. Phil...Kobe needs to be more passive, like setting up his teamates for more open shots.

it is time to play for a title and not individual achievements. lakers are playing like a TEAM now. before it was still depending on how Kobe was doing, even last year.
who stepped up when Kobe was guarded by 4 green shirt Celtics? no body. not Gasol, not Odom, not even Sasha.
But now the game is changed. everyone on the Lakers have confidence. they do not worry if Kobe is having an off night. the rest of the starters and 2nd unit know what their roles are. they are their to win.
it's a long season, keep players under 30 minutes is huge. and beside, Kobe is now getting old, he will need his legs come April, May, and June.
    keep on rocking Lakers.

This could be the best team ever, but not the flashes. I watched the days of Jerry West, Baylor,Chamberlin, Majic, Worthy. I like this team. If they remain heathy, L A will have another championship.

A great team will always beat a one man effort look at the almighty jordan in his early years. The bulls were awful with a great scorer, like jordan kobe has finally understood what its like to not have a team. Nobody cares about the most points or individual efforts IS THERE A RING IS ALL PEOPLE CARE ABOUT. Its not boxing, golf, or bowling its BASKETBALL A TEAM SPORT. by the way go CELTICS all those guys deserved a ring but could never get there. THAANKS BOSTON FOR KNOWING HOW TO WHAT TEAM AND DEFENSE MEANS......
