The critics are still out on what kind of defensive identity the Knicks will develop under new coach Mike D'Antoni. Perhaps Ron Artest can help.

The New York Knicks may have a chance to sign Artest to a five-year, $30 million mid-level exception, if he opts out of the last year of his contract with the Sacramento Kings and becomes a free agent on July 1. That contract would pay him $7.4 million. It's even a possibility the Knicks could work a sign-and-trade with Sacramento, if the Kings would agree to it.

When the Daily News asked the Queensbridge product if he would like to play for the team he grew up watching, Artest flashed a huge grin.

"Who wouldn't want to?" Artest said in the tunnel outside the Garden's locker rooms following yesterday's WNBA game between the Liberty and Monarchs. "I'm not going to talk about that stuff till July 1. I don't play for the money, I play for the love."

As the Indiana Pacers president, Donnie Walsh acquired Artest in a 2002 trade with the Chicago Bulls. Walsh also dealt the former St. John's forward to Sacramento in 2006 after his role in sparking the notorious Pacers-Detroit Pistons brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Send Artest to C-Town - a prototypical Mike Brown guy - a monster on D and can score!

That will be another bad move
Artest is overrated. If he would have been that good as "sources" claims he would achieve something in this league. He aint done nothing yet.
The knicks should hive minutes to Chndler, Balkman and they will be rewarded

Stephen Jackson is a real nice guy who has done a 180... he got an NBA achievement award for helping out or giving back to the community. He's not the thug off the court people think, on the court... watch out 2pac. but you want those guys on your side, same with Artest... but he's a head case.

The Knicks need help but it isn't in Artest. I've been a Knicks fans since '73 and I will say they have been nothing but a disappointment through the years. Ask Patrick Ewuing how many rings he has! The Knicks aren't even an entertaining team. I say clean house and start over.

Guy may be a head case but at least you know he will play hard for you on both ends of the court unlike Marbury.

Well here we go again have we not been down this road before with one of the best defensive players that the kings organization has seen.We would be foolish to let artest opt out of his contract and lose him to the knicks. The maloofs should hold on to our guy and do whatever is necessary to keep him on our team and not lose him to the knicks or anybody else.
