Jackson: Pierce was no Willis Reed

Enter the dragon. Just think, the Boston Celtics and their fans had already hated the Lakers and vice versa for almost 50 years before Phil Jackson became part of the rivalry. Until now, the most objectionable person associated with the Lakers people here could think of was Jack Nicholson, an actor who just roots for them.

I've got good and bad news, Celtics fans. H-e-e-r-e's Phil! Anyone else would have let the Celtics have their little moment in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, even if Paul Pierce's return wasn't really as dramatic as Willis Reed's. Nevertheless, Pierce knocked down a couple three-pointers in a row, fans chanted Reed's name and the next thing you knew, it was a folk movement.

Of course, Jackson was a teammate of Reed's with the New York Knicks and knows exactly what happened. Reed tore a muscle in his right thigh in Game 5 of the 1970 Finals against the Lakers, which his teammates then won in an improbable rally from 16 points behind. Reed missed Game 6, had his thigh shot full of painkillers before Game 7, dragged his numb leg out in a crazed Madison Square Garden, made two early jump shots and started the Knicks on their 113-99 rout. So if Pierce's moment was a little mythic, it didn't actually measure up to that of Reed, who played two full seasons after that and retired at 31.

"Paul got carried off and was back on his feet in a minute," said an amused Jackson. I don't know if the angels visited him at halftime or in that timeout period that he had or not but he didn't even limp when he came back out on the floor. I don't know what was going on there. Was Oral Roberts back there in their locker room?"

Paul Pierce should go to Italy and play soccer. He's cartd off and then comes back into the game five minutes later? Typical hotdog showboat. If he was my son I would be ashamed.

........and Kobe Bryant slithering on the court against the Jazz, claiming back spasms, only to come back and score 25+ points. What's the difference? Besides, the Celts did not win the game with Pierce and the knee incident. The Lakers simply did not contend with the Celtics Defense. Oh wait, AND Bryant could not find the rim but refused to allow his teammates to attempt shots. I said before, if the Kobe Bryant of old show up, they willl lose against the stellar defense of the Celtics. The Lakers finally faced a real defensive team. It's about time! Go Celts! Kudos to Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and even little old man Sam Cassell.

again, no one is gonna fake an injury in the nba finals, something he has waited his whole life for, he wouldnt risk that, no one would, he heard a pop, and the trainer wouldn't have told everyone to carry him if they thought he wasnt badly hurt, try to think before u speak

Sportswriters are desperate to make a story/controversy about this incident. I saw the press conference & the writers couldn't leave it alone. Jackson was scoffing at the writers, not Paul. There's no need to dishonor Willis Reed by obligatorily comparing everyone who plays through an injury to his moment in 1970. And there's no need to dishonor Paul Pierce by trying to force a comparison with Willis. Neither the players nor the coaches are seeking these comparisons -- it'st the writers. Call it dunce journalism, lazy thinking, whatever -- the inability to draw distinctions. I think the players and coaches on both sides are relieved it's not worse & are telling the fool-press to get over it and back to the games.

Phil is a good coach, But his record is so good because he has always had great players. I would love to see him coach the Knicks, And see how great he is then. he would probably win 22 or 23 games a season.

whoever think he faked a injury in a close game in the finals need to put that(you know what you smoking) out. I can't beleive anybody really beleive this. I bet the rest of the finals Laker and Celtic fans will be calling everything that happens against their team a conspiracy. What happen to real reporting.

Whoever bumped his knee on a hard object will admit the sudden sharp pain one felt. Pierce didn't overact. He just felt the sharp stab of pain and the fear that his finals appearance he waited for in ten years is finished. The LA columnist and Phil Jackson are just making excuses for the Laker's debacle in Game 1.

One game does not make a series even when the celts won game one by thirty in 1985 they still lost the series in the infamous boston garden where they held home court advantage. sorry boston fans your time in the sun is over. maybe the celts should film the lakers practice.
