NBA - Sports Rumors

All-Star guard Allen Iverson(notes) has through representatives told the Grizzlies he would like to play in Memphis, an NBA source told the Memphis Commerical Appeal Thursday.

The high-scoring veteran is a free agent for the first time in his professional career. Iverson, 34, reportedly has only had mild discussions with the Miami Heat since the free agency period began Wednesday. There were also internet reports Thursday that the Chicago Bulls have interest in Iverson.

The Grizzlies had no comment about Iverson's inquiry.

While no deal is imminent and conversations have been only exploratory, Griz brass are said to be weighing the pros and cons of adding Iverson to the team's youth movement, according to the Commercial Appeal.

Iverson would certainly have to take a major pay cut from the $21 million he earned last season with Detroit. It is believed that the Griz would only entertain Iverson at what they'd deem a reasonable price, and if the 13-year veteran agreed to play off the bench.

Those criteria would seem to make Iverson and the Grizzlies a bad fit.

I can't believe the third most prolific scorer in the history of the game, is having issues finding a decent team to pay him off of free agency. Unbelievable....

I wouldnt mind Iverson in Chicago... I dont think it will put the Bulls over the top in the East right now, but he will provide the scoring that we miss with Ben Gordon gone. Im wondering why Chicago does not look at Rasheed Wallace.

He needs to go to Chicago or Heat... Dwayne Wade or Derrick Rose... I would prefer Miami but either one seems awesome... Not Memphis... Memphis is rebuilding team... Not for Iverson...

i think that if he goes to memphis, they will be a low seeded playoff team, despite iverson being known as more of a ballhog

kinda sad - a great talent reduced to obscurity, hoping to get on with a last place team with no hopes of contending. If his attitude were better, maybe he would be more relevant. Instead, he gets what he deserves.

Iverson as a sixth man coming off the bench would be awesome...inject scoring and energy into the second team...awesome! Iverson as a starter and leader of the team...disaster!

now that stephon marbury is leaving boston this will be a great chance for AI to be on a championship caliber team! but the catch is that he will have to take a 1 year $1.3 mil (veterans min) and come off the bench.

i can't imagine D Wade and AI in one team ...
Chicago ... well , i think it's a great option if Bulls are going to add on of "Big Guys" . without it it makes no sense . D Rose + AI would be great but rebounder Noah for all AIs missed shots ? i don't think so ...

Your career is pretty much done when you say you are interested in signing with the Grizzlers! No player of any value ever signs there as a free agent! He needs to retire!

Iverson is an awesome scorer but he can't help a team win. why do you think he wants to go to the grizz. he likes to play for average teams so he can hog the ball.

i dont know how he would foi in miami but it would be the best choice for him. The bulls would be the next best choice and last memphis where he would waste that last couple of years in his career. Hes 34 he should go to the team that has the best chance to win not a team like the memphis that is most likely going to bee in the lottery for at least another 2 years! Yea with the heat he'll be getting a little less money but really how important can mone be to him right now your not in danger of being homeless! Either Heat or Bulls even though the bulls do have alot of guards.
p.s DWYANE WADE is on the heat...jus sayin

Iverson can try with the Spurs if he wants a ring, and spell Parker off the bench (or as starting SG?). Spurs are a good choice especially as Pop will probably be able to keep Iverson in check. Other than that, only other team that makes sense would be Cavs?
Iverson has always been the first fiddle his entire NBA career, would be interesting to see if he could mesh with others (aside from Detroit). My guess is that he can't, he needs the ball, but the best teams right now share it pretty well.

Maybe the Knicks, or the Suns. Knicks might be able to give him a decent amount (4-8 mil/year)? for a year or two? Might help them appease fans and lure a free agent if Iverson players unselfishly (big if).

The spurs should look at him but they won't. There lineup would be stacked... at least if Iverson can play on a team and not just hog the ball... But for a team that always has injuries especially at guard, Iverson can help
    pg. Parker (Mason off bench)
sg. Iverson (manu and Finley come off bench)
    sf. Jefferson
    pf. Bonner/Gooden/Blair (whoever is hot)
