Today is the deadline to sign contract extensions and Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay(notes) is hoping it brings him one. He's apparently looking to make $50 million over five years, according to FanHouse.
"I think I should be in that range,'' he told the site. Of course, the Grizzlies haven't offered such a contract up till this point so Gay may lose this game of chicken. Gay's agent apparently told him there was a 50-50 chance that such a deal could be worked out. The agent, Jeff Austin, apparently was supposed to talk to the team last night.

Good luck getting that kind of money Rudy

a swingman who averages 1.7 assist in his career is beyond pathetic. he doesn't play physical either given that he rarely draws foul.
anybody who plays that many minutes and take that many shots can duplicate his numbers.
let him become a free agent and play hardball with him. i don't see him being worth more than 7 million per year in this economy.

This is how much interest that this guy gets. three posts. hardly worth close to 10 mil a year. but hey, it's the grizz. out

better spend it somewhere else. you might contend a championship with the amazing amount of talent you can get on the cheap.
nate robinson, an electrifying scorer, had to accept a 2.7 million qualifying offer due to the economy.
david lee, the nba leader in double-double, only got 5 million.
veteran point guard andre miller only got 6.5 million.
future hall of famer allen iverson only got 3 million.
linas kleiza, who averaged 12 points as the "7th" man for denver in 2008, had to pack his bags and go back to europe.
so no, rudy gay, with his pathetic 1.7 assists in 38 minutes as a swingman and horrible 3.7 free throw attempts per game, is clearly a 6 million per season sorta guy. the only reason his stats is acceptable is because he plays a lot of minutes and he's a ballhog. he is nothing special. he wouldn't even be starting for a contender.

the celtics will soon regret it cuz when the big 3 are on the decline, leave the team, or retire, they won't have cap flexibility anymore.
that said, gay isn't worth the money either. hell, josh smith didn't even sniff 10 million per year and he is a way better player.
