NBA - Sports Rumors

The Philadelphia 76ers don't have to do much thinking when it comes to where to begin when the free agency period Wednesday. For the Sixers, it all begins with point guard Andre Miller(notes), the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

"He's the main free agent, an important free agent," said Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski. "Neither of us is going to be at each other's doorstep at 12:01 a.m., but we will talk on July 1. There's no doubt."

After Miller, Stefanski will fill the remaining gaps to form the 2009-2010 roster.

Wednesday is when the Sixers are allowed to contact Miller, an unrestricted free agent, to begin discussions about what it might take - how much money and over how many years - to re-sign the team's 33-year-old starting point guard, the Inquirer reported.

Although teams may begin negotiating with free agents Wednesday, contracts may not be signed until July 8.

Miller, who last season averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 assists, is represented by Andy Miller, who has said his client's No. 1 option is to remain with the Sixers.

With all the guards available, why not go for someone younger than Miller?
Then again, he's not bad at all.

Miller is still a very productive point guard. He is the best option for the team, until Holliday is ready to start at the point. They need to sign Miller, then package Sammy and Lou in a trade.

Miller is hurting the team. 76ers need a 3-point shooting PG since Kapono is the only threat now and not sure how much floor time he will get.

They should sign a BACK-UP Point Guard. Start Lou Williams at Point Guard, have Andre Iguodala at Shooting Guard. Get a back-up Point Guard, then use the rest of your money signing Forwards to help out Kapono, Young, and the rest.

@Rebuilt, it would be terrible to have AI back in Philly. I'm not sure it would be a good thing to have that washed up ballhog on your team. The only way I could see him productive for a team is if he could flourish in the 6th man role. Other than that, I don't see any playoff contending team having any use for him.

It's amazing how some people on here post their comments and they have no idea what they are talking about.
Sk22, have you ever watched the sixers play?
Lou is not a point guard. That is not his natural position. They tried many times to make him a point guard, but it hasn't worked.
"use the rest of your money signing Forwards to help out Kapono, Young, and the rest"
Is that really what you think? I mean, how many people can they possibly fit on their roster? How many forwards are worthy enough to go on their roster with a limited salary cap?
The team needs to focus on resigning Miller, or an adaquate point guard, then work on getting rid of Sammy and getting a center who doesn't complain and whine like a girl. The forwards (yes, including Iguodala) are the core of the team right now.

if the sixers resign andre miller tey would be better then last year with brand back and thaddeus young improving and now we dont have to worry about having the worst 3 point shooting in the league anymore now that we have jason kapono and our bench is great

Sign Miller, please! McGrady would fit sending Dalembert and Young to Houston. There has to be a center hiding in Europe the likes of a Gortat! Or, grab 'Turk'!!!

The person they really should look at is PG Mike Bibby. The question is if he wants more then they can afford. But Miller is still good too. SK22 you are stupid....Lou is not a PG and they need to send him and sammy in a deal to Houston for T-MAC. I dont even care if T-Mac has a season ending injury this season that will free up about 25 million for next season allowing them to have some money to go after a player like Dwade. but if they can get either bibby or miller they should be fine for this season and be competitive.

What an wonderful asset Turk would offer to the 76rs. Andre Miller is absolutely crucial to resign.
Can you envision a Miller/Turk combination on the floor? Would have no need for a Jason Kapono since Turk can shoot the lights out in a pinch. Just don't have any idea where Elton Brand fits in with the SIXERS at this point???
Allen can go follow Hubie's brother ....he is the diametric of an Andre Miller. and has demonstrated that (although he is a great athlete) he is NOT a team player.

I just have to say that Miller is one of the most underrated PG's in the NBA. It wasn't until I picked him up on my fantasy team last year that I realized he put up solid numbers accross the board. This would be a great pickup and would definitely deserve the money he will get.

the Lakers should get this guy... could you imagine a back court of Kobe and Miller? but he's an L.A. native, having grown up in L.A. rooting for the Lakers... it just makes sense for him to come back home, were at this point of his carrer he'd have the best chance of winning a title...but you never know with these guys, what's more important the money or the Larry O'Brian trophy?

SK22 you my man are a fool...lou williams needs to get friendly with hot sauce and start entertaining folks in ghettos, andre miller is one of the most underrated players in the league which cannot be replaced by some streetball type player, the only knock on miller is his defense so if there is a way to conserve some cap and get a defensive oriented point guard who distributes then thats acceptable too. however, if we can't move dalembert cause of his ridiculous contract why even try to save money until 2011 so just sign miller who hopefully with the new offense and brand back can focus more on the defensive side and distribution as opposed to scoring like last year

First of all Bibby is not the answer. Miller makes the most sense, he is familiar with the team, will be smart enough to run the new offense. I know Bibby has run the offense before, but he plays no D , shoots way to much and had a great cast of players around him.
The Sixers need to really figure out is what to do with Young,SF/PF. If you listen AI , he wants to play SF, not SG and is very open about it. That leaves us with Young as 6th man which could be really nice.
Sign Miller and try anf get Daniels for cheap as FA for SG, that will make our backcourt solid, Daniels is an excellent Defense a player, consistent shooter.
    PG Miller
    SG Daniels
    SF AI
    PF Brand
    C Dalembert (by default)
    Bench
Young, Kapono, Speights, Williams, Greene, Smith and two other stiffs. Could be solid enough for 45 wins.

Miller needs to be resigned. Lou is essentially useless because he cannot handle the Point and is to small to play SG, not to mention he can't shoot. Any Sixers fan who wants McGrady is a fool. This guys puts up big numbers because he shoots all the time. He is not a winner and folds when the going gets tough. He is always injured as well. We have a solid, young SF in Thad. AI can play the 2 with Brand and Sammy (If we cannot trade him). Holiday can play the back up PG, with Green, Kapono, Smith, and Speights rounding out the rotation. Sammy and Lou need to go, but we need to get a C back in return. Just someone who can rebound, block shots, and play some D.

While I would really love to see Andre come back, you gotta look at it from his point of view. He will only be a good player for another few years, so coming back to the Sixers probably doesnt make that much sense to him since this team will probably only be about a 7th seed next year.
One down side of bringing him back is the fact that, even though hes a good point gaurd, he probably wont teach Holliday a whole lot, Andre just doesnt have that type of a personality.
