Cuban: There is a market for Marbury

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban acknowledged Stephon Marbury will have plenty of suitors when the New York Knicks finally waive him, but stopped himself before putting his hat in the ring according to a report in the New York Post.

"Absolutely," Cuban said when asked the question of whether several teams will vie for the lightning-rod point guard's services. The Mavs owner then backed up, after once being fined for tampering. I take that back," Cuban said. "I'm not allowed to talk about players on other teams."

Marbury would make an odd addition with Jason Kidd , though Marbury has told friends he'd be willing to play shooting guard wherever he winds up. Dallas, off to a 3-7 start, uses Jose Barea as backup point guard.

Cuban understands the brass' call on Marbury.

"That's how a coach comes in and establishes himself," Cuban said. "I like Steph, like him a lot. He's a good guy. But teams have politics and issues. He's still a good player."

As reported first in The Post, Knicks president Donnie Walsh, Marbury and Player's Association attorney Hal Biagas met Thursday for 45 minutes to discuss a buyout. Marbury said yesterday the ball is now in the Knicks' court."

I hope they trade him, because its a shame letting him just sit there doing nothing for the remainder of his contract. If you don't want to sign him after this year, that's completely understandable, but you might as well use him as a spark off the bench until then, maybe even increase his trade value.

Can't trade him. The Knicks need the money to come off the books at the end of the year.

To get Marbury's contract off of the books in NY is most important. Dallas is stuck right now as a mediocre team. Dallas is already deep in the back court...

Cuban would be an idiot to sign him. Kidd and Marbury in the same back court when neither can even hit the rim from three -point land. Unless he is willing to be a back-up.....

NOOOO! As a die-hard Maverick fan, I beg you not to "woo" Marbury. Sure we aren't great this year, but he'd kill any chemistry this time may have.

The Mavs have ZERO chemistry NOW! Jayson Kidd was the final nail in the Mavs coffin. Kidd took up the cause of Terry, Howard, Stackhouse, & Avery Johnson. It's all Dirks fault, we are all great players, we don't need no German guy leading us or being the star of the Mavs. How is that working out?
Jayson Kidd, Jayson Terry, Josh Howard, & Jerry Stackhouse all need to go, but no team wants any of them.
Or, Dirk needs to go so the losers can win championships without him & be happy. FAT CHANCE of the Mavs without Nowitzki even making the playoffs. If Dirk Nowitzki was on another team, that team would not trade him for Kidd, Howard, Terry & Stackhouse 4 for 1.
    Set Dirk FREE!

The knicks killed themselves when they signed Marbury to such a huge contract, especially when he didn't warrant such a contract. He has been good, but not a great player for the Knicks. The Knicks should either play him or just sit him for the season, find some minor reason to put him on IR. It doesn't make sense to have the guy show up just to watch the game.

the fact is is that marbury is still a good young player, his contract is crazy( 20 million) but he is still a player that could be a good reserve on a good team, mavs, cleveland, magic, spurs, celtics, hornets. just to name a few. whats its gonna come down to of course is money, and if the team trust that he wont become a cancer like he was in new york.

Here's a nice tid-bit.. Mark Cuban has just been indicted for insider trading to the tune of 750k. It could be increased to 3x's that amount. This is a civil suit not criminal, no jail-time, just penalties. Maybe Mr Cuban will be dumping salaries........

Dirk is the most overrataed superstar in the l.sure he can get 30 but he gives up just as much and he can be stopped with tight pressure by too many 3s and 4s in the league.dallas will never win the west let alone the championship with dirk, yeah kidd was a bad idea but the mavs were`nt going anywhere before the deal that destroyed a good team but they were never going to win cause dirk is not you think a superstar.....

marbury actually has mad skillz if he'd only grow up. i can see him fitting in very well in the laker's triangle offense. his offense would be a tremendous asset. i wouldn't be surprised if the lakers made a bid for him because if any coach can straighten him out, it would be phil jackson. look what phil did with rodman.

Scout Master, go back to doing what you do best. evaluating little boys. Dirk is one of the best players in the league, just not great enough to win a title on his own. I think Howard is the problem on that team. He is just not a team guy.

U R so right. Dirk is the best 7 footer to ever play the game. One of the top 5 players in the world. Except his shooting percentages are better than Kobes, Lebrons, etc. And he gets twice as many rebounds as they do in the playoffs. But he can not win it all by himself. When Nash was with the Mavs, Dirk was just getting started, and Nash played limited minutes under Nellie. D'Antoni let Nash go full tilt.
Why aren't Dirk, Nash, Gasol, Yao, and other top foreign born players in the top 28 in the NBA in FT attempts?
    Predjudice?

Marbury should be allowed to play with the current knicks team, why try to buy him out when he wants to play. Maybe he won't make a difference, but it's worth a shot. It would be a bad idea to let another team get him, especially any good west coast play-off team. Say, he wins a championship with that other team, this would only make the knicks look more foolish for not giving him a chance.
