Bulls were defenseless in defeat

Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro downplayed the animated conversation Ben Gordon had with him Thursday as much ado about nothing. And nothing is what the Bulls delivered defensively Friday at the United Center in a 114-94 loss to the Toronto Raptors, who snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Not that the Bulls' offense was much better, given their 23 turnovers that the Raptors converted into 27 points.

The Bulls, whose losing streak hit four games, trailed 91-90 with 6:22 left, but the Raptors closed with a 23-4 run. The Raptors' rout came two days after Bulls general manager John Paxson said the team's defense must improve and after two days of practice. The Raptors shot 56.6 percent for the game.

''It was miscommunication,'' Derrick Rose said of the Bulls' defensive breakdowns. ''Yelling 'switch,' and we didn't switch. Stuff like that.''

Guard Jose Calderon returned to the Raptors' lineup after missing 10 of the last 11 games because of a hamstring injury. He scored a game-high 23 points and had 10 assists. Center Andrea Bargnani added 22 points and forward Chris Bosh 17.

Gordon led the Bulls with 19 points on 5-for-14 shooting. Del Negro downplayed Gordon's run-in with him after practice Thursday, in which Gordon used expletives when complaining to Del Negro about being fined for being late for a recent team flight.

''So what? You just deal with it and move forward,'' Del Negro said. ''Those things happen all the time that [media] don't know about. It doesn't bother me. It's part of the business, part of dealing with things, trying to get things going in the right direction.''

What a difference a Calderon makes to the Raptors. Eh?
Calderon outscored Chris Paul 22-12. Calderon shot 8-8 from the floor, 4-4 on 3's & made both FT.
I thought Paul was a GREAT defensive player & Calderon didn't play defense. hmmm!
Last night Calderon shot 9-10 & made all 4 of his FT against Super rookie Derek Rose.
I could go on & on. But, the media & haters will post that Calderon sucks, & every PG in the East is better.
Even though Calderon has a higher FG%, higher 3%, and is shooting 100% on FT. Last season Calderon joined Steve Nash as the ONLY NBA players to shoot 50-40-&90%. Calderon will Join Larry Bird as the ony two players in NBA history to shoot 50-40 & 90 in a season TWICE. Unless Nash or Nowitzki get a little hot. Did I mention that Calderon led all NBA PG in assists to turnover ratio last season?
Calderon will have more assists & fewer turnovers than any East guard that makes the all-star team. And, Calderon will have a higher combined shooting % than any player in the NBA. and, calderon will shatter the NBA record for highest FT% in a season. And yet, Barkley, Kenny Smith, & C-Webb named 7 PG in the East as deserving all-star consideration, none of them Calderon.

Sometimes the pundits just have an odd dislike of the Raptors in general, but Calderon is an invaluable cog to this team. Seriously, I don't think most fans understand how efficient his game is sometimes. Even though his defense leave a lot to be desired, he has to be one of the top 7 PGs in the league. I'd rather have Calderon running the point that Baron Davis, because I know what I'm gonna get on a nightly basis

Hey, coach! if the players don't want to play defence, then put people on the
floor who will. joakim noah is pitiful on the floor, it seems he never knows
where to be, whether on offence or defence. put gray in the game , at least he can score.

How can a team such as the Chicago Bulls become better? Defense, defense and more defense. Too many gunners and not enough defensive stoppers. A coach rather he's a season veteran or a rookie cannot and will not be successful in Chicago until he teaches defense and team play (such as distribution of the basket- ball) to
discipline players. Thank God for Derrick Rose and the discipline he brings to the Bulls. You know you don't have
to be a great team (all super stars ) to be competitive in the NBA.

The trouble with the Bulls is that they won't play D. Del Negro needs to find 8-9 players who will play D and stick to that rotation. Until he does the Bulls will falter. As far as bringing back Michael and Scottie get real. The only balls they can play with are their own.

I honestly don't see why the Bulls are playing such horrible defense. They were one of the best defensive teams 2-3 years ago, and their core players are basically the same. Hinrich, Deng, Gordon, and Nocioni were the key players on their playoff teams and they still are. They don't have Ben Wallace anymore, but they were good before that. There's something to be said about losing Tyson Chandler, but they've added Noah and Tyrus Thomas, who are defensive-minded players. Unless you're going to say that Chris Duhon is head and shoulders above Derrick Rose (I couldn't type that with a straight face) , I think you have to blame Vinny and the coaches. There's just no other excuse for this lackluster defensive play.

Alright shouldn't john paxson eventually have to take the blame for constantly constructing underachieving teams, i remember john paxson's career defining moment in game 6 of the 93 finals, and yes that was a big shot but it could be argued that pax hasn't done that good of a job being a g.m. The bulls have some good players but they seem to have no chemistry as a team and even if pax deserves to get canned unfortunately he wont because he more than likely is tight His boss Jerry Reinsdorf so more likely my cousin Vinney will get canned sooner or later.

Yankees Rule ,the Yankees wont win in 09 they have some questions that need be answered about their pitching staff like can J.J Burnett stay healthy during the season and make it to the playoffs with pitching arm still working. and will C.C be able to handle pitching in a place that he originally didn't want to go to. What are the yankees going to to do about their catcher situation? On the plus side they have mark t. will will help protect a-rod and strengthen the yankee offense.

I've been a Bull's fan for many years. It's hard to believe they win any games the past few years. John paxon needs some nodose to wake up. Rose is excellant. But joakim (JOKE for short) is a total waste. There is NO inside threat or power forward player of any mentioning. Are we just content to fill the roster with lifeless individuals? Will the Bulls match the Cub's string of listless years?

Paxson needs to make a move now!!!! We were like 3 games under and are now free falling out of the playoff race. If Paxson can't do it then get someone who can!!! Im done with this guy. He was a nice player but is sucking as a GM. Get rid of Gordon and Hughes. Noah and Gray need to leave too. Those two are fourteen fett of useless space! Gordon can score but his salary is way too big and he's not a real team player. Make moves or say hi to another top ten pick...... I like getting good talent but I would rather see a winning season.

I think Jose Calderon kind of lost in the early of season, part of that because the new players and old players been trade. But it's they get Marion, I think Marion will get benefit from Calderon's play. Calderon is average 9 assist before injury. I think his number could increase once the team play better than 16-28.
Bulls have all piece in the back court, but not the front. They don't have any player can take the jump shot, that hurt when you have a point guard like Rose, who can create space for their big man. So the main issue here for the bulls is get a big guy can shoot.
I don't understand why they trade the #2 pick for Thomas in the 2006 draft, because they know they need a big guy who can take jumper, but why they trade for Thomas??????
Thomas is another Ben Wallace when in the time they have Ben, then they trade Ben for Gordon, who is also not a jump shoot player. They need a guy like Brad Miller, but he is too old. I think they may try to shot for Chris Bosh in 2010. Why not. You have Rose, a excellent point guard, Deng, a average small forward, Thomas, who may become Ben Wallace, who play great defense in the old day.
Hughes, Gordon, krinich, and all the big man are useless, you know the basic great team is have a Big man who can play defense, score. PF who can post up and make 15 feet jumper. Wings player who can knock down 3s and defense trancation, and a floor general who run every play, and you win.
But the bulls are far from that and still fighting their way and find it.....
