Magic use 19-0 burst in 3rd to top Celtics 96-89

Preview | Box Score | Recap

BOSTON (AP)—The Orlando Magic needed less than 48 hours to go from a terrible third quarter to a terrific one.

Vince Carter(notes) and Dwight Howard(notes) each scored nine points in that period to erase an 11-point halftime deficit, and the Magic went on to beat the Boston Celtics 96-89 on Sunday.

“In a matter of three days, I’ve seen the worst quarter we’ve had since I’ve been here in three years and the best now in three years,” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said.

On Friday night, the Magic blew a 21-point lead and lost to the Washington Wizards 92-91 after being outscored 39-17 in the third quarter. On Sunday, they outscored the Celtics 36-11 in that period.

The Magic (34-17) moved into second place in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of the Celtics (32-17).

“We were upset about the way we played in the first half,” said Howard, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds. After that, “we got stops and then we came down and hit some shots. And after that, we just kept it rolling.”

Carter had a game-high 20 points and scored nine during a 19-0 rally that began after Rajon Rondo’s(notes) 3-pointer gave the Celtics a 60-51 lead with 7:17 left in the third quarter—Boston’s fourth and final field goal of the period. That surge wiped out a 51-40 halftime deficit and led to a 76-62 margin after the third quarter. The Magic stayed in front by at least five points the rest of the way as the Celtics did too much freelancing.

“We were getting what we deserved,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said, “I love our team on paper, but we tend to be front-runners. When we get a good lead we relax and teams take advantage of it and then you’re caught and it’s tough to turn it back on.”

Rondo scored 17 points and Ray Allen(notes) added 14 for the Celtics.

But the Magic put together an outstanding 12 minutes of offense and defense in the decisive quarter. The Celtics had seven turnovers and only four field goals in the period, while the Magic had 12 baskets and two turnovers.

“One of the guys said, `We’re better than Orlando,’ and I said, `No, you’re not,”’ Rivers said. “They knocked you out of the playoffs last year. Orlando’s better than us right now. Atlanta’s better than us right now. L.A. (Lakers are) better than us right now.”

The Celtics did make a late run with seven straight points that cut the lead to 94-89. But Rashard Lewis(notes) just beat the 24-second buzzer with a short driving shot that made it 96-89 with 18 seconds to go.

“We did a good job just sticking with the game plan no matter what the score was,” Jameer Nelson(notes) said.

The Celtics lost despite getting two important players back. Paul Pierce(notes), their leading scorer, returned after missing two games with a strain on the top of his left foot and scored 13 points. Key substitute Marquis Daniels(notes) sat out the previous 29 games following surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb and finished with eight points.

“The foot was a little sore, but I don’t think it affected too much of my movement,” Pierce said.

Carter started the 19-0 spurt with a 3-pointer. Howard then picked up his fourth foul with 5:58 left in the quarter but remained in the game, and Carter followed with a three-point play. Then the Magic, the most prolific 3-point shooting team in the NBA, made three straight—by Lewis, Carter and Lewis again — for a 66-60 lead. Howard then dunked an alley-oop pass from Matt Barnes(notes) and Nelson followed with a driving layup.

Tony Allen(notes) finally scored for the Celtics on two free throws, cutting Orlando’s lead to 70-62 with 1:33 left in the third. But the Magic got the final six points of the quarter on two free throws by Lewis and a layup and two free throws by Jason Williams(notes)—giving them 25 of the last 27 points in the period.

Kevin Garnett(notes), scoreless in the first half, scored Boston’s first three baskets in the third quarter to maintain the 11-point lead at 57-46. But Orlando went on a 14-3 run, tying the game at 60 on a 3-pointer by Lewis with 4:36 left in the period. Carter then put the Magic ahead to stay

“Mirror image of what happened to us the other night at home—big lead at the half, get absolutely annihilated in the third quarter,” Van Gundy said. “People want to know how you can let that happen, now you’ve got someone else you can ask besides us.”

NOTES: Garnett had nine rebounds, moving into 20th place all-time with 11,960. He passed Dennis Rodman, who had 11,954. … Boston is 1-7 combined against Orlando and Atlanta, two of the top four teams in the East. … Orlando improved to 15-12 on the road while Boston fell to 15-9 at home.

Those two games they gave away to the magic and the lakers absolutely killed me as a Celtics fan. That shot by Kobe, made me feel like it was october, 2003 again. But this last game where they are completely outplaying Orlando to the half, then completely collapse? I wasn't even mad...just mystified. I just do not understand the Celtics. I love them, but I don't understand them. They are getting older, but they still have so much talent on that team. If they played even a little consistently for four quarters, they are capable of beating anyone. They showed that against Orlando and especially the Lakers....but then they just stop playing Celtic style defense and offense and it all goes down the tube. They don't just get cold, tired or worn out, they change their whole style of play and just lose these games they had no reason to lose. I love the Celts, and I'll always root for them, but it's getting hard to tune in and watch them keep doing this.

I know, THERE ARE NO LAKER FANS ON THIS BOARD. LMAO!!!!!!!!
You guys are Joking, right?? If anyone team is inconsistent With a full line up that would be the Lakers.. You have a SOFT, LAZY, LOW DEFENSIVE IQ, CENTER. AN EXTREMELY soft POWER FOWARD.. WHO VANISHES IN PHYSICAL GAMES.. AN OLD POINT GUARD WHO CAN NO LONGER KEEP UP WITH ANY POINT GUARDS. A terrible BENCH who can't Sustain any Leads given by the STARTING 5 and the Zebras. An aging Superstar KOBE who's fabricating injuries to compensate his high level peformance is diminishing, basically he's WORN out.. 14 seasons in the League at 32.? His shooting percentage is diminshing, Me-only attitude is on its way back. Internal disputes are becoming more evident. ODOM : "I think it made us a little more focused as a group, to come in here and do whatever we had to do to stay in the game,” said Odom," - without Kobe Bryant against the win in PORTLAND Go figure, right? Gasol and Bynum are complaining of not recieving any touches, how could that be? LMAO.. Lakers Have been Exposed for their Lack of Transitional Defense, Bodying up Physical Defenders, Guarding PICK AND ROLL.. Collaping under Physical pressure by opponents.. YOU FAKER FANS FEEL SORRY FOR YOURSELVES.. DENVER EMBARASSED YOU TWICE IN BLOWOUTS.. Denver is going to the Finals from the West.. I ADVISE you faker fans to be concern of your own team.

As a Laker fan, I can't help but feel a little sorry for the Celtics. They've been so inconsistent, and if they keep playin' like this then they ain't goin' nowhere in the playoffs. Heck, they might even end up losin' to the Clippers.

Remiles, that's what they all said last year, but as you see, we still beat you. Also, you other teams better start gettin' scared of LA, b'cause they proved they can win without Kobe.

As a Celtic fan I am not too worried about this loss. The Celtics are still getting healthy and they were playing well enough early on to win. I am more concerned about KG's knee. I hope his weak defense has to do with rust because he does not have the lateral quickness that we are used to seeing out of him. Hitting jumpers and open dunks are not signs that he is back all the way. KG playing nasty D and getting the C's fired up with easy buckets in transition are what made them successful in the past. I have not seen much of that this season even when they have won. As long as they win at least 50 games and head into the playoffs healthy they are contenders. However, if KG is not healthy by then they are just another playoff team.

The thing that bothers me the most is that fact that when the Celts have the lead they tend to sitback and not go all out to put more points on the board and build an even bigger lead. Like something in side the Celts says ok we'll shut it down and cruise the rest of the game. How and why, I dont know but if I'm Doc Rivers I'm pissed. The defensive intensity isn't there through the whole game and too many times the Celts are depending on the 3 and not the inside game(I blame Doc for this). My hope ist that the Celts aren't just satisified getting to the playoffs cuz their regular season bad habits will catchup to them and they''ll have no one else to blame but themeselves.

WOW, Vince Carter decides to come out of hibernation and burns the Celts. The Celtics look old and tired. As a lifetime Boston resident, it pains me to say this but I dont think a Ray Allen trade would be the worst thing in the world. They need a young spark in the lineup to light a fire under their asses. To learn the number one mistake made by sports bettors, find out here http://bit.ly/9UE0rm
