Bucks win 3rd straight behind Jennings’ 26 points

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—It took a half, then Brandon Jennings(notes) showed the Memphis Grizzlies why he is among the best of this year’s rookie class.

Jennings, who leads first-year players in scoring and assists, scored 24 of his 26 points after halftime, and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Grizzlies 103-98 on Saturday night for their third straight victory.

“We’re a second-half team,” Jennings said after the Bucks overcame a 12-point, first-half deficit. “We’re not going to throw in the towel and give up. Everyone came out and contributed in the second half.”

Charlie Bell(notes) added a season-high 19 for Milwaukee, which has won seven of its last eight. Ersan Ilyasova(notes) finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and reserve Luke Ridnour(notes) contributed 13 points and a season-high 12 assists.

Rudy Gay(notes) had 24 points and 10 rebounds, but Memphis had its three-game winning streak snapped. Zach Randolph(notes) scored 18 points, O.J. Mayo(notes) had 15, and Marc Gasol(notes) finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Bucks improved to 8-3, their best start since going 9-1 in 2001-02, despite playing without starting center Andrew Bogut(notes) (left leg strain) and guard Michael Redd(notes) (left knee).

“We had a lot of guys contribute, which is what we need right now,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said.

Jennings started showing his talents after halftime, scoring 12 in the third on 6 of 11 shooting. The Bucks also negated the Grizzlies’ inside players by going small, outscoring Memphis 31-22 in the period.

“They have big scorers on the wings and down low,” Ridnour said. “We were able to dig some balls out, make them miss, and the big thing is we got the rebounds. From that, we were able to run.”

The Grizzlies used 12 points from Randolph and 11 more from Gay to carry a 50-45 lead into halftime. Bell led the Bucks with 11. Milwaukee trailed by 11 with just over 2 minutes left in the half, but the Bucks closed with an 8-2 rally.

“The guys did an excellent job of getting the lead to five right there at halftime, so we knew it was manageable,” said Kurt Thomas(notes), who had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis shot well in the first quarter, reaching 71 percent at one point, helping the Grizzlies build the early lead to 12. Gasol, who is among the league leaders in field goal percentage, hit all four shots in the period, and Randolph only missed one of his five.

But the Grizzlies couldn’t build the lead any further because of turnover problems, committing a half-dozen miscues in the quarter. They committed 16 on the night.

“We had low energy to start the game,” Skiles said. “When the second rotation came into the game, we got back into our game.”

Jennings managed only three shots in the first half, missing all of them and recorded only two points.

“I thought we did a good job for most of the night, just trying to stay in front of him, making him make tough shots,” said Memphis guard Mike Conley(notes), who had 11 points and five assists and was responsible for shadowing Jennings much of the night. “He made a lot of tough shots, and we have to live with that sometimes.”

Carlos Delfino’s(notes) 3-pointer from the right corner, his only field goal of the night, evened the score at 53. A three-point play by Ilyasova less than a minute later gave the Bucks their first lead of the game, and Milwaukee carried a 76-72 advantage into the final period.

Milwaukee scored eight straight points after the game was tied at 90 with 3:21 left to seize control.

“That last five or six minutes, it’s winning time,” Ridnour said. “Everyone stepped up and made big plays.”

NOTES: Dan Gadzuric(notes) started at center for Bogut. … Bucks F Hakim Warrick(notes), who played his first four seasons in Memphis, received a warm ovation from the Grizzlies fans when he entered the game in the first quarter. … Milwaukee was playing its first road game after going 5-1 on a homestand. … The Bucks’ bench outscored Memphis’ reserves 35-16. The Grizzlies’ bench has not outscored an opponent’s. Gasol, who entered the game ranked fifth in the league in field goal percentage (60 percent), was 6 of 8 on the night. Over the last four games, he is shooting 84.4 percent (27 of 32).

MVP is a joke for this rookie. But, he is a true talent. He needs to pass the ball more and have more assist. I hope he doesn't become an early ball hog like Kobe did when he first started in LA. Spread the ball around more kid and learn to play better defense. The shot is there. Glad that Michael Redd finally is getting some real help for the Bucks. The guy is loyal. He's been in that small francise for years losing and he is great player in his own right.

The NBA draft history is filled with superstars who where not the top selections in the draft. It is possible the Clippers would have traded the 1st pick for a #7-8-9 pick and taken Brandon Jennings if they knew how good he was going to be. Would you trade Brandon for the #1 pick Blake? I would not. I just wish the Warriors would have drafted Brandon at #7 and traded Monta Ellis whom would be expendable with Brandon running the team. Oh well,,welcome to the unpredictable NBA draft.

I 'm not arguing that some teams or some players don't give a crap about winning during the regular season or whatever, I' m pretty sure that everyone wants to win each and every night. I' m just saying that the regular season is what it is: most of the teams start without knowing what to expect, they don't HAVE to win every night, or make the playoffs, they 're not even sure how good or bad they are, they make their season and their plans as they go. Just take a look at the Bucks, the Hawks, the Suns, the Rockets, or, on the other hand, the Spurs, the Hornets, the Pistons, or even these aging Celtics: they take what they can get, it ain't a live or die thing every week, every month, every year. If their season goes wrong, hey, there's always next year. Now, if they reach the playoffs, that's a whole different story: things become very serious all of a sudden. To return to BJ: is there a more comfortable context to start playing bball than... Milwaukee? Compared to the Bucks, even the poor Italian Lottomatica Roma seems like ...an army: they HAVE to make their national playoffs, they HAVE to win some trophy, they HAVE to participate in the Euroleague, permanently, they can't afford to wait, for whatever reason. (is it the fans? the money? the "glory"? Not sure...) This kind of pressure has a real impact on the game itself: it's not really a players' game over here, it's more of a coaching thing, or even a constant power-play between the teams, anything will do to get the job done. (I admit I find all this craziness rather exciting!) But if BJ was THAT good last year, I have no doubt that they would have found a way to drain him, exploit him, whatever. Instead, it seems HE got the best of them, not vice-versa, which is totally unheard of, and much credit to BJ for having found a way to make himself so much better while in Europe. I only wonder: how on earth did he do it??? Practice? Gym? Some occult Italian genious coach? Divine intervention? ; - )

When you make that generalization about the NBA, you are probably thinking of Shaq, who doesn't start playing until march. but look at the rest of the league and tell me that the Lakers aren't fighting for every game. Tell me that Melo isn't playing hard to put up those numbers to help the nuggets. Tell me that every team right now isn't trying to find some formula to win and get into the playoffs. The Euroleague is a finesse game. They don't have to worry about the strongest basketball players in the world crushing them. They don't have to work out nearly as hard to even stay competitive.

As for Jennings now playing in Europe, it may be because they didn't want to start an 18 year old boy who was only planning on being there for a year and investing the time in developing him. Where as NBA teams are more readily accepting of young players and giving them large roles on team, especially teams that have been draft fodder for a while.

Nice to see all the usual haters around here are awake and full of themselves, as always; I wouldn't have it otherwise. Having said that, let me also say that I 'm no big fan of European bball, except for the fact that it IS a dogfight, an ugly and competitive one, up to a level that I can only match to the NBA playoffs. I enjoy the NBA regular season as much as the next guy, it's fun to watch, but, let's be real, it completely lacks the competitive fun of the playoffs (or Euroleague, for that matter: just ask Josh Chlidress, or BJ himself!). What can I say, we have pretty much turned every sport into a battle around here, I guess that kind of keeps us from shooting each other all the time. Anyhow, spare me the Nowitzki crap, please, I'm no big fun of him either, better shed some light on the BJ mystery, 'cause I' m reading some sound stuff here, but still nothing close to an explanation. The kid still looks supernatural to me! ; - )

P.S.1 Hey, the Euroleaugue champions total annual budget is something like 30 million dollars, and it's like the second biggest in Europe. For an NBA team, that's a joke, so let's not compare quality, just game-types.
P.S.2 @ #32: it's Greece, man, you should bomb us sometime, get to know us better, we 're nice, quiet people over here, come see for yourself...

To poster #20, take ur European ass back to Europe and watch them play that slow, non-athletic, white boy ball. Dirk is the best European player in the history of the NBA, and we saw what happened to him in the ONLY finals appearance he'll ever make (DWade happened to him). BJennings will do better as an NBA player than any of ur Euro-trash. Take that back to Estonia, or wherever the hell ur from.

ro_g: The NBA, the best league in the world is not "real pro ball" in the regular season, but Euroleague is?

Get over yourself. 90% of the guys in your Euroleague can't play in this fake pro regular season NBA ball let alone the "real" ball of the playoffs.

In the Euroleague, Jennings played his role and learned a few things even though you can now see that he was the best player on that team by 1000 kilometers. Give him credit.

If the coach last year turned Jennings loose the way Skiles had in the NBA, he probably would have averaged 25 points per game without breathing hard. The team probably would have been better too. But the Euroleague is obsessed with players paying their dues.

Before you start talking that "real" pro ball again, realize that the NBA has the best players and is the toughest league by far, and your best Euroleague team would win about 10 games over an 82 game NBA season.

No disrespect to Euroleague ball. It is a very high level of play. But get it straight. Stop trying to cut the NBA down to make yourself feel better. Remember that your teams are filled with American players that couldn't make the cut in the NBA, or veteran ex-NBA players who want to play a few more years after they cannot play in the NBA anymore. That's the truth.

I see your point ro_g. Euroleague is entirely different. Not much was expected from Jennings last year. After all, BJ was nothing but an 18 year old kid that made an unprecedented leap from HS ball to Europe.

Once he arrived there, BJ was expected to report to his team; learn the game from coaches & players; contribute when asked; and keep his mouth shut. All things which he did - gladly.

He used his time over there as a learning experience.

What I really give him a tremendous amount of credit for is - he never doubted his skills, abilities or openly second-guessed himself despite lack of playing time.

I will be the first to admit, I didn't envision BJ making such a splash in the NBA this quickly. He has been a pleasant surprise not just to me, but the entire Milwaukee organization & fans of the NBA.

@ rog..um #20 the reason he didnt do well is because he came off the bench... its mad obvious he takes awhile to warm up......you cant just throw him into a game and expect him to shine off the bat...its not supernatural... once he figures out how both teams are moving...he clicks in and contributes

So saying that.... alot of coahes/owners/scouts screw themselves cus they dnt give people a chance...its not because this games playing style is different..or where hes playing... its HOW MUCH hes playing

and its like tony parker said...he can drive, shoot the three, pass and hes left handed... it not really that suprising hes doing well.. he has advantages...

Being European, I had a chance to watch BJ playing in the Euroleague (the international European league, not a national league) last season with Roma. His team was a decent one, not a contender, but a pretty decent team, much like, um, the Bucks this year. Well, BJ didn't really have much of a role. He used to come from the bench, put in some explosiveness and some instant offense, commit some TOs, and then back to the bench. I really couldn't see much of a future for this kid: he was obviously skilled and more importantly cool-headed, kept his head down, very likeable overall, but didn't seem able to play pro bball consistently on both ends of the floor. What he has been doing this year is quite impossible to believe for anyone who saw him last year. My explanation? This is the regular NBA season, not the Euroleague, which means a more relaxed, uptempo type of game, not a dogfight every week. That seems to suit him fine, but in my eyes it's not REAL pro bball till the playoffs. I feel one shoud have to wait 1 or 2 years before passing judgment on BJ, because, really, what he 's been showing is supernatural or something, given what he showed last year in Europe. I mean, ok, he 's young, but come on! The crucial thing must be the different type of game he's playing in right now, 'cause things in Europe have also been hard for Josh Clildress and Von Wafer too (Josh seems to be adjusting this year 'though). So let's wait, see what happens...

Only 2 rebounds and 2 assists. That's exactly what Jennings is turning into- a pure scorer similar to Iverson.
