Nowitzki’s 41 points lead Mavs over Spurs in OT

DALLAS (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks needed a big game from Dirk Nowitzki(notes) to compensate for the loss of three injured starters, and that’s exactly what he gave them.

Nowitzki scored 11 of his season-high 41 points in overtime and the Mavericks held on to beat the injury-depleted San Antonio Spurs 99-94 on Wednesday night.

Drew Gooden(notes) added 17 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, and Dallas extended its winning streak to four games.

Gooden, who finished last season with the Spurs before signing with the Mavericks on July 20, started at center with Erick Dampier(notes) out because of an unknown illness. Dallas was also without starters Josh Howard(notes) and Shawn Marion(notes) because of left ankle injuries.

“With Josh out and Marion out, I’ve just got to keep going offensively and make things happen,” Nowitzki said after his 14th career game of 40 or more points.

Nowitzki’s three-point play with 2:28 left in overtime put Dallas in front for good, 92-91. After Jason Terry(notes) hit a 15-footer, Nowitzki made a 3-pointer on Dallas’ next possession to stretch the lead to 97-91, closing out the Spurs.

“He’s playing great basketball and (I) think he’s one of the top guys right now in the league,” Gooden said. “He’s really playing at a high level. We need that because of all the injuries we have right now and he’s doing everything he can to carry this team.”

Nowitzki went 15 for 29 from the field, converted 10 of 12 free throws and pulled down 12 rebounds to continue a big week for the German superstar.

Nowitzki’s buzzer-beating overtime jumper gave Dallas a 115-113 victory at Milwaukee on Monday night after he scored 25 in a 95-90 road win over Detroit on Sunday.

“I hoped he was having an off night,” said Matt Bonner(notes), one of several Spurs who tried to guard Nowitzki. “I can play perfect defense and jump as high as I can and he can still score.”

Tim Duncan(notes) had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Spurs, winless in four road games this season.

Duncan missed all three shots and went scoreless in overtime, and afterward he blamed himself for the loss.

“I know I played badly in the overtime,” Duncan said. “The OT wasn’t good for us and Dirk really took over and won it for his team.”

The Spurs were without starting guard Tony Parker(notes), who aggravated his sprained left ankle in Saturday night’s loss to Oklahoma City. San Antonio also lost guard Manu Ginobili(notes) in the first quarter due to a strained left groin.

“We definitely needed this win because they were without Ginobili and without Parker,” Nowitzki said.

The Spurs certainly missed two of their stars, but the Mavericks were equally short-handed.

“With Tony out and then how Manu went out, it hurt not having them in there,” Duncan said. “But I thought we did a good job keeping it together.”

With the game tied at 80, Gooden was credited with a basket on a goaltending call against Antonio McDyess(notes) with 1:58 left in regulation to put Dallas ahead.

Duncan drove to the basket on the next possession and Gooden picked up his sixth foul. Duncan knocked down both free throws to knot the score at 82 with 31 seconds remaining.

Nowitzki’s tip-in 17 seconds later gave Dallas an 84-82 lead, but Duncan’s jump-hook with 2.3 seconds remaining drew San Antonio even.

The Mavs had a shot to win in regulation, but Duncan blocked Terry’s 19-footer at the buzzer.

NOTES: Ginobili started and scored two points in eight minutes of the first quarter, then went to the locker room before the start of the second quarter and was done for the night. Coach Gregg Popovich said Ginobili would sit out Thursday night’s home game against Utah. … Marion was hurt in a game at Milwaukee on Monday night. … Howard missed his eighth game as he recovers from offseason surgery. … Dampier has been undergoing tests to determine the nature of the illness, and results won’t be known until next week. …Thomas made his debut for Dallas after sitting out the first 11 games while he completed his recovery from offseason surgery on his right knee. Thomas, who finished with two points in 14 minutes, was signed as a free agent on July 28.

I was talking about who was having the best seasons so far, not who sells the most merchandise or is exposed on TNT the most. James and Bryant are living off of hype. I agree with #75, they don't even belong in the conversation. Basketball is a TEAM game, not a 3-point or dunking contest.

It wouldn't really matter how tough and strong Dirk could finish a game. He is very efficient but if he'll never get decent support, the Dallas will always be just an above average team. The supporting cast he had in 2005-2007 are pretty much the same... so expect age to wear the team down. Even with Marion added, they need decent guys who can play tenacious "d" and be an offensive threat to take the pressure off Dirk. Howard, Terry, Dampier and even Kidd need to be traded for a quality big man, and some other guys who can bang and really take a lot of load out of Dirk.. Too bad Cuban made the biggest franchise mistakes by trading Devin Harris, resigning Dampier and not looking for other quality big men. If only Dirk had decent help, he'd be counting rings by now. Cuban needs to act like his age. I don't know if he'll make or break Dallas now.

Dirk continues to dominate the league!! It's a good sign for Mavs fans that with three starters out of the lineup, the Mavs continue to pull out four straight wins. If this team ever gets healthy, prepare for some beat downs.

Btw, I don't think Nash will be made available. PHX fans would storm the castle and burn it down, figuratively speaking of course.

Cotton, I'll trust your stats on Howard, they do indict his value, or lack of it . Kidd at about 70% of his prime self is still effective and a top 10 PG (probably right about #10. I like JJ for his effort and think Terry's an effective player overall. Ross carries Clippers Karma, baggage that has dragged down better players. So for the sake of your trade, got anyone in particular in mind?

The Mavs are two guards that can play defense short of really being a contender. I am not doing a 180, I knew this before the season started. The Mavs went for A F in Marion, and resigned a guy that has a fork in his back, and is done in Kidd. They did nothing but replace Antoine Wright with Quinton Ross to shore up their guard defense. NO, Josh Howard is NOT the answer to their guard defense. He is a matador, incapable of guarding his own grandmother.

The Mavs need to trade Howard, Terry & Kidd, for 1 Superstar guard that can play defense. Or two younger guards that can play "D" I Love JJ Barea ( he is faster with the dribble than CP3) but doesn't help on defense either.

So, the Mavs can use Barea & Bobeauxyz? @ PG, and run baby run. But they need a starting SG & a backup SG that can defend offensive minded SG's.

How much of difference do Howard, Marion and Dampier make? Didn't the mavs get smoked last week with them in the lineup against the Spurs without Parker and Duncan? Then it takes them overtime to beat them this week. Yeah, that's the perfect ingredients to be considered OVERRATED!

    I just don't see how Tony + Manu = Dampier + Howard + Marion
Dampier = good defender, but a backup at best on most teams
Howard = solid player, but lacks BB IQ (or IQ overall)
Marion = solid player, but has to have someone to create a shot for him
Tony = one of the best point guards in the league
Manu = Impact player than can change a game when he is on the floor.
Now don't get me wrong Dampier, Howard, and Marion are good complimentary players, but as far as impact players they are not. Tony and Manu have the ability to change a game and get other people good shots. Sorry but Howard, Marion and Dampier do not.
The spurs only true point guard left for the game was Hill and he was in foul trouble. You noticed how the spurs struggled to score when Hill was out of the game?

David you are a fool for saying the mavericks showed the Spurs who's boss, really, because I recall the Spurs beating a full strength Mav team a week ago without TD or Tony. And your 3 players out don't equal the 2 we were without, TP and Gino Dampier, Howard, and Marion. The Spurs do have depth, but not at the PG position, we have 2 and Manu is the emergency PG (I know Manu plays the SG but without TP or Hill on the floor the offense runs through him, even if Mason is technically at the point), when we also lost Manu I knew things could be tough and they were. Don't bang your chest at an overtime win to a team missing 2 of their best players on the team, 2 of the best players at their position in the NBA, the same can't be said for your 3 missing players.

As a Spurs fan I'm not getting too down for the loss, I wish we pulled it through but I like the fight in my team. What we need is time for the entire team, or at least the main players, to be healthy so we can get our lineups together. We have entirely too many new players and returning players with different roles that need to be worked out; I'm not overly concerned about it right now because this is a championship team with a HOF coach who know what's most important and it's not until early 2010.

Cotton Piquer, I'm doing a 180 here and renouncing my summer crticism of the Mavericks. They are better than last year, possibly the best in the Cuban era, and without question a contender. And while I'm backpedaling, let me remove the overrated tag I put on Dirk. He's all that Marc thinks he is. Playing mad? I think he's playing with a renewed sense of joy in the game.

Absolutely CORRECT about Howard. The Mavs lose with Howard in the lineup. He forces poor shots from distance, and at critical times in the game. Poorly chosen shots from distance, considering Howard is a poor outside shot, equates to a turnover. In that respect, JH is responsible for 8-10 turnovers a game. He's out, they win. His play is self-centered. They play team ball without him. Unload his lazy, idiotic, unpatriotic arse!

Dallas Mavericks showed the San Antonio Spurs who's boss. The fact that they lost three starters, and still manage to pull out a win is incredible. This game was fanastic. Dallas is a stronger team now.

    Tashieman

FYI: The Mavs started last season with Josh Howard & went 2-7. This year they are 9-3, 7-1 without Howard. In Dirks MVP season the Mavs were 67-15 after losing their 1st 4 games ( with Howard).
They were 12-0 without Howard in the lineup for the rest of the season. Remember that Howard averaged 12.6PPG & shot 29.6% in the Mavs 1st round loss to the Hornets in the 2008 playoffs.

Now tell me how the Mavs need Howard to compete for a championship. The Mavs need to unload Howard for anything, even a 1/2 dozen basketballs to compete for a championship.
