MILWAUKEE (AP)—When a rookie praises a veteran, it might be self-serving. Brandon Jennings’(notes) description of Andrew Bogut(notes) was right on.
Bogut scored a season-high 22 points and had eight rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks beat the New York Knicks 102-87 on Saturday night.
“Bogut was on fire,” said Jennings, drafted 10th overall in June. “He’s been playing real well. We need that every night from him. Now that Michael Redd(notes) is down, he’s picking up the scoring a little for us, and that’s helping us out a lot.”
Redd is expected to miss two weeks because of a strained tendon in his left knee.
The Bucks (3-2) lost the opening tip, but nothing else as Milwaukee shot 74 percent and used a 23-2 surge to pull away. The Bucks led 40-22 after the first quarter.
“Then they just went on a stretch where they made everything,” Chris Duhon(notes) said. “Once you give a team four or five open shots, then they start making tough shots and it just weighs on you. We just got to figure out a way to start off better.
The scoring burst clearly surprised the Knicks.
“I think we were all stunned,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. “I’ve taken a licking before, but I don’t know what’s worse that that.”
A missing defense, perhaps.
“They kept giving us a lot of open shots,” Jennings said. “They were giving us so many easy shots.”
Duhon was struggling so bad that D’Antoni took him out.
“He had every right to take me out,” Duhon said after scoring one point on 0-for-4 shooting in 20 minutes.
Duhon was asked if there was something wrong with the team.
“I don’t know,” he said. “We just got to continue to figure it out. It’s just one of those things where we’re struggling in many ways. The only way you can get out of it is just fighting through it.”
Bogut played his best game so far this season after a lower back injury sent him to the bench last January. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds against the Wolves on Friday.
“Physically I’m 100 percent,” Bogut said after shooting 8 for 14 in 31 minutes of action. “It’s more of getting that mental rhythm back of the NBA game, the travel, the back-to-backs, get used to that again. Otherwise, I feel fine.”
Jodie Meeks(notes), Milwaukee’ second-round pick in June, whose previous best was six points, had 19 points, and Jennings, who had just nine points in the Bucks’ 87-72 victory at Minnesota on Friday night, added 17 points.
David Lee(notes) had 18 points and seven rebounds for New York (1-6).
Toney Douglas(notes) added 16 points for New York, Danilo Gallinari(notes) had 15 and Larry Hughes(notes) 14. Al Harrington(notes), the Knicks’ leading scorer with 22.3 points a game, was 1 of 7 for five points.
Bucks coach Scott Skiles liked what he saw overall.
“The first half was obviously as well as we’ve played very sharp on the defensive end against a team that is very difficult to guard, offense was good,” he said. “We came out with a ton of energy and really played hard and, in effect, won the game in the first half, which is very difficult to do in the NBA.”
NOTES: The Knicks opened the 2002-03 with a 1-8 record and finished fifth in the Atlantic with a 37-45 mark. … Bucks had 22 points in the paint in the first quarter while the Knicks had 4. … The Bucks shot 60 percent (27-45) in the first half to the Knicks’ 34.2 percent (13-38) and outrebounded New York 28-13 behind Bogut’s eight rebounds and Hakim Warrick’s(notes) 5. … Milwaukee’s Ersan Ilyasova(notes) had a career-high 13 rebounds. … Before the game, D’Antoni make comparisons between Jennings who was still on the board when New York chose Hill. “It’s too early to make an assessment,” D’Antoni said, but then added about Jennings, “We knew he was good.” … The Bucks (3-2) are the only team in the NBA to hold all of their opponents to under 100 points.

The Knicks are in desperate need of PG/SG help. Nate’s hurt. Duhon is OK in some games but is clearly not consistent enough to be THE man (Over indulgence in NYC night life man be the culprit, but that’s just speculation). Passing on Sessions was at least understandable for salary cap reasons. Passing on Jennings was also understandable to a certain degree for his immaturity, inexperience, and crappy numbers in Europe, making him too risky. Passing on JWill, Jamaal Tinsley, AND AI as free agents in the preseason for minimal 1 yr contracts which would not affect their 2010 plans is beyond me.
Perhaps Walsh/D"Antoni overestimated how good Toney Douglas would be based upon preseason games and didn’t want to undermine his development. When are people going to learn that PRESEASON GAMES ARE MEANINGLESS!!! The pressure and urgency of season games along with more intense defense from the competition from actual NBA players is lacking in the preseason. For God’s sake, even Jeffries and Tskitishvili looked good in the preseason!!! Walsh may have experience but he’s clearly not as clever as he thinks he is.
Getting back to the Knicks needing PG/SG help…Jamaal Tinsley is still a free agent and AI is unhappy in Memphis. Both can still play. The Knicks have an open roster spot and an opportunity to improve their team NOW and not have to wait till the summer of 2010. Considering the embarassingly unacceptable 1-6 start, and Nate’s injury (among other things) it’s time for the Knicks to bust a move. Please don’t make the many Knicks fans suffer unnecessarily much longer. We’re waiting…
BTW, I don’t like D’Antoni’s preference to use a rotation of only a limited number of players. It wears players out over the course of the season and doesn’t give bench players adequate time to get comfortable enough with the system. D’Antoni’s system worked well in Phoenix because he had Amare and Nash, who are exceptional players. Unfortunately, there’s no one like them on the Knicks, except maybe DLee.

After that, we can certainly afford Lebron and look for five new defensive minded players, with adequate offensive ability in the free agent market after this season.
After next season, we have another 17 million coming off the books in the name of Curry and Jeffries. We can sign another two players after that and still have a little cap space left over. And of course, it all comes down to who we sign that will either make us much better if not great.
ANY FOOL can figure out that the Knicks are in the best shape of any other team out there after this season and next.

I agree that Darko and Jeffries are just useless as scorers and if we need a good defensive presence then put Darko in there. But Hill should be the overall guy. At 1-6 D'Antoni doesn't seem to get it yet.

We all know he's been talking about New York a lot so there is the real possibility that he may come here. Especially if this team gets a major face lift.
Curry is the biggest obstacle right now and that is going to be the biggest challenge Donnie will have in trying to get rid of him. Because I also think that if Curry is here next year, Lebron will pass and won't want to play with a known useless loser like that.

I'm not trying to be a di*^?/khead, but he started wiht cleveland in a similar situation that the knicks are in now: REBUILDING.
He's been to the eastern finals with cleveland past 2 years. They jsut need one more piece on O to challenge Orlando and Boston.
I love this city, but I don't see Lebron coming here unless there was a system installed that would produce a contending team within a year or two from now. The looks of the Knicks, I don't quite see that happening.

But they're a young team and can only get better.
I just hope BOGUT stays healthy and that Jennings ends up playing more than Ridnour(no offense Luke)!!

Starters:
PG douglas, SG hughes (eventually chandler when his timing is back), SF gallo, PF lee and C hill, with darko ready with some D if either of those last two are struggling.
Trade Bait:
Everyone else
Free Agents Resigned:
Lee (maybe and only if he's playing the 4)
Hughes (maybe for his experience, can still play, and because he's best friends with lebron)
Duhon(maybe and only if he's the backup because he knows the system and can distribute)
personally i would like to see bosh replace lee and move hill to starting PF, but we shall see.
the king is coming!

Between Chandler and Harrington, they combined 57 minutes between them, going 2-17 from outside, scoring a total of 8 pts.
For a team that has zero defense, they can't afford to have a bad offensive game. And that's exactly what they had tonight. 1-6?! I knew they'd be bad, but not this bad. We're in danger of breaking Philadelphia's NBA record of only 9 wins in a season.
I commend Donnie for giving us hope after this season, for the fine job he's done in protecting the cap space. As for D'Antoni, I question his recommendation for acquiring Gallinari (who may end up being a fine shooter, that all fine and dandy, but.....), and passing up a huge defensive presence in Brook Lopez when we had a chance to draft him. I always felt that we needed to start with a center to build our defense back up again. As of right now, we are sorely missing that presence in the middle.
If this team isn't improved 'GREATLY' after this season, I'm gonna go with #8 and wait for the playoffs in about 20 years. I'm welcoming the Nets to Brooklyn more and more as this joke rolls along.
