Wade scores 40 to lead Heat past Wizards, 93-89

WASHINGTON (AP)—Dwyane Wade(notes) wasn’t about to take himself out of this game.

The Miami Heat star played every minute of the second half on his way to a 40-point game, including a jumper with 25 seconds left that gave Miami the lead for good on the way to a 93-89 win against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

A day after playing nearly 38 minutes and scoring 23 in a fast-paced game against Phoenix, Wade didn’t even think about taking a rest. At one point in the second half, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra looked to his star to ask if he wanted a breather. Wade made eye contact and shook off his coach’s suggestion.

“I ain’t going nowhere,” said Wade, explaining his thought process after the game.

His coach thought about it and knew he was fine leaving his star on the court.

“I decided they probably weren’t going to take out their guys, either,” Spoelstra said.

It was the first time Wade scored 40 points since getting a career-high 55 in April against New York. Quentin Richardson(notes) had 19 points and nine rebounds for Miami (4-1).

Wade outdueled Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas(notes), who scored 32, in a game that was deadlocked down the stretch until the final minute. With the game tied at 89 and a minute left, Wade made plays when he needed to and Arenas couldn’t answer.

“This was one of those games where you have to will your team to victory as the leader,” Wade said. “As the guy they look to, I took it upon myself to get the job done.”

Wade got the job done on 14 of 26 shooting. Despite his point total, Arenas shot 9 for 27 from the field.

Arenas lost the ball on a layup with 17 seconds left after Wade’s jumper, falling hard to the ground after driving through traffic. After a Wade free throw to put Miami up 92-89, Arenas attempted to lob a ball to Brendan Haywood(notes) that bounced off the basket to end Washington’s chances.

“It hit the rim,” Arenas said. “That’s it. It’s not rocket science—it hit the rim.”

DeShawn Stevenson(notes) missed two free throws with 44 seconds left to set up Wade’s jumper.

Haywood had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Caron Butler(notes) had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Washington.

The tight final minutes came after Miami opened up a point early lead. Haywood opened the game with a dunk, but the Wizards didn’t hold the lead again until Haywood’s hook shot at 6:28 left in the third quarter gave Washington a 57-56 edge.

The rest of the quarter belonged to the team’s dueling stars. Arenas scored nine of Washington’s final 13 points in the third quarter. Wade outdid him, tallying Miami’s final 10 points, including a last-second layup to tie the game at 66 entering the fourth quarter.

“At one point during the game, I told him, ‘This is what you do,”’ Richardson said. “‘We’re right here. Now, you take us home.”’

Miami had led by as many as 19 in the opening quarter, going up 27-8 with 3 1/2 minutes left in the first. The Heat led 50-41 at halftime.

“It’s amazing as bad as we were in the first quarter they only scored 93 in the game,” Washington coach Flip Saunders said.

The Wizards finished the game without starter Mike Miller(notes), who left in the fourth quarter with a left shoulder sprain. Saunders said he is expected to be out seven to 10 days.

NOTES: Miami G Daequan Cook(notes) sat out his third straight game with a right shoulder strain. … This was the first of three meetings between the teams in November. They play again in Miami on Nov. 10. … Miami swept the series (4-0) last season. … Haywood was given a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a third-quarter dunk.

As always, Gilbert Arenas is a ball hog who takes way too many shots. He's a poor man's version of Allen Iverson. Great scorer, horrible shooter, gets the line a lot, cares about himself too much, and will never lead his team to success.

Wade, James, Bryant, all score the easiest, most unchallenged 40 points per game I have ever seen. The one year, or no years of college basketball experience league has spawned a generation of players that lack the basic fundamentals of defense. Multi years in a collegiate program that emphasizes team defense, would give the NBA smarter, better, ballplayers. Kobe Bryant as a consistent member of the all defensive team? LOL.

D wade has a SWEET Jumper right now. Looking like he did when they won the Title. Too bad he is alone on that team.

D wade respect for that Sweet jumper dude. It is the best in the NBA right now. You and Paul are both playing better offensivly than Lebron and Kobe right now.

    Sick shooting percentages guys.

Guess what team showed up at least seven times in the top 20 games last season?? DWYANE WADE AND THE MIAMI HEAT... Guess who had the game that ranked Number 1?? DWYANE WADE AND THE MIAMI HEAT?? Let's start being honest with ourselves people... Most fans dedicated themselves as LeBron fans, and they don't want to admit that they like the Cavs, didn't quite make the right decision.... and Laker Fans just hate to see that there could actually be a guard who can dethrone Kobe b4 he retires....

Give respect where respect is due... The Truth of the matter is that Gilbert usually give Kobe trouble, he gives LeBron trouble, and he gives Wade trouble... the difference is Wade always find a way to beat Arenas... I think that Arenas would even admit that Wade has been the best in the league for the past few years...

What's really amazing is that an NBA team hired as big a loser as Flipper. I say the over / under on this blank wall being fired is February 20.

Wade is the best all around offensive guard the NBA has seen in a long time. The advantage I give him over KOBE is that if a team is talented enough, he can play long stretches at the point. Even at the 2, last season he was 8th in the league in assists, while leading the league in scoring. The ironic thing about it, is Wade does NOT dominate the ball possession as much as other players, but still gets a lot of assists, because more than once a game, he is making passes that YMCA players could finish! Although I like KOBE, he is more of a one-dimensional scorer. KOBE is still awesome on defense, but WADE is also under rated as a defender. Announcer's last night were saying WADE's teammate had more skills coming in the league that WADE were completely wrong. They need to look at the play off during his first year in which he out dueled Baron Davis in a 7 game series!

It seems like it is inevitable if a team gets a big early lead, that the losing team will come back. This was a good game that went down to the wire but the Heat were able to take it. For those that wanted to see the Phx VS Orl game on ESPN, I bet you are glad they didn't show that blow out. The Wizards just couldn't slow down D-Wade. That dude is a beast. I have him on my fantasy team but would have rather seen him play bad and the Wizards win than what he did tonight (Reality comes before fantasy).

I gotta say, Wade was pretty sick out there. If he keeps playin' like that, the Heat will be a force to reckon with in the playoffs (it's about time).

This is comin' from a Laker fan.

Why is this a nationally televised game?

the NBA should give ESPN flex powers otherwise games like Phoenix vs. Orlando nobody sees. What a thrilling game that could be. Phoenix is returning to form and Orlando is a east power house.

Instead we see two bottom playoff teams in the East. Makes no sense.
