Nuggets rout Pacers to remain unbeaten

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Carmelo Anthony(notes) got a little help from his teammates to lift Denver to its best start in 24 years.

Anthony scored 25 points and Chauncey Billups(notes) added 24 as the Nuggets beat the Indiana Pacers 111-93 on Tuesday night to improve to 4-0. Nene had 16 points and 13 rebounds and reserve Arron Afflalo(notes) added points 15 for the Nuggets.

“Everybody stepped up tonight,” said Anthony, who was averaging a league-best 38 points coming into the game. He was just 6-for-17 from the field, but made up for it by making 11 of 14 free throws.

The Nuggets say they have carried momentum from reaching the Western Conference finals last season.

“We should feel good, we shouldn’t feel no other way,” Anthony said. “It seems like we’re picking up where we left off from last year.”

Former Denver guard Dahntay Jones(notes) led the Pacers (0-3) with 20 points. He made perhaps the strongest statements after the loss, Indiana’s third straight by double digits.

“It’s very tough to take three losses in a row like this,” he said. “We’re sick and tired of losing.”

Danny Granger(notes) scored points 18 on 6 of 16 shooting and Roy Hibbert(notes) added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana.

Pacers forward Troy Murphy(notes) bruised his lower back when he fell hard to the floor in the first quarter and did not return. He was second in the league in rebounding and third in 3-point percentage last season.

“It’s kind of stiffened up,” he said while sitting in front of his locker. “It’s not the most comfortable thing right now, but hopefully, it will feel better tomorrow and I’ll be able to go.”

Denver made 8 of 15 3-pointers on Tuesday while Indiana made just 3 of 22.

“We had a good defensive feel for the game all night long,” Denver coach George Karl said. “Any time you win a game on the road and keep it in double digits, you’re doing a lot of good things.”

Denver’s players said it was important to get a win at the beginning of their six-game road trip, and they felt getting off to a good start would be the key. The Nuggets led 30-13 at the end of the first quarter, even though Anthony shot 1-for-7.

Indiana shot 22 percent in the opening period.

“The first quarter, we didn’t make shots that we’ve made the past couple of years,” Indiana coach Jim O’Brien said. “You can’t shoot poorly and dig yourself out of a 20-point hole in the first quarter.”

The Nuggets led 55-39 at halftime, but Indiana cut Denver’s lead to 59-50 on a layup by Jones.

Billups responded with a 3-pointer. Later in the quarter, when the Pacers again started building momentum, Billups hit another three. Anthony followed that with a breakaway dunk to make it 71-55. Anthony and Billups combined for 23 points in the quarter, and Denver led 83-71 at the end of the period.

Denver pulled away in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 25 points. Indiana’s only lead was 6-5 in the first quarter.

The Pacers are starting to feel the pressure.

“It’s a combination of everything, a little combination of the injuries, the new guys, everything like that,” Murphy said. “We’ve got to figure it out quick or we’re going to be in a deep hole, too deep a hole for us to dig ourselves out.”

Denver already feels comfortable and has maintained the camaraderie it built last season.

That closeness included Jones, who signed with the Pacers as a free agent in the offseason. Some Denver players joked with him from the bench in the fourth quarter as he shot free throws, yelling out “he’s with us” and “he wants to be wearing blue.”

“We have a real good aura, a real good feel about what we can be as a team this year,” Billups said.

Notes: The Pacers will raise a banner celebrating Mel Simon before Friday’s game against Washington. The team’s co-owner died in September. … The Pacers and Nuggets played two preseason games in Asia this year. … Indiana shot 24 percent in the first quarter against Miami on Friday, then 22 percent in the opening quarter on Tuesday. … Indiana’s Mike Dunleavy (knee), Tyler Hansbrough(notes) (shin) and Jeff Foster(notes) (ankle), all sat out.

    Hey "laker fan 1989",
You seem to be quite similar to many other Laker fans (not all of them) who post comments on sports sites. In other words, you talk trash. You post incendiary comments designed to demean and denigrate other NBA franchises and their fans. You know what? That's cheap, a childish mistake. You may want to get some help, because you appear to need it. When a sports writer mentions that a team hasn't had such a good start for more than 20 years, the implications are obvious: It's possible the team is better than they've been over that time period. (Remains to be seen, of course, since they lace 'em up for 82 games -- way too many, but that's a topic for another time.) It doesn't mean the Nuggets have had "a crappy ass team" over that time, as anyone who has watched the league over the past seven years will attest. So please, take your idiotic comments elsewhere. Surely you don't want to make a fool of yourself here again and again, do you?

Oh no! Carmelo didn't score a point per minute tonight! Holy crap, this guy is on fire, ain't he? Has anyone ever averaged a point per minute over an NBA season? If anyone can, it's Anthony.

If this was the best start a team had 4-0 in over 20 years then they must have been a crappy ass team for them to take over 20 years to have a 4-0 record. LOL....

    groblix... Suns? Really?

Jason O... It's nice to hear some true repect from a fan of one of the Nuggets' rivals. Between the Lakers, Mavs, Spurs and Nuggets it should be a wild ride to and through the conference finals.

JR's return will only make the Nuggets better, we still have some work to do on our post defense, though.

    MEEELLO.....

    # 27 How do I even respond to that short idiotic comment. They are a totally different teams with Billups, which showed since they made the conference finals. Not a choke job by any means. Secondly, Melo is way better than he was a season ago and so is the team chemistry. This team will make conference finals and quite potentially the NBA finals. Not sure if any team can beat the Celtics in a 7 game series this season, they look amazing.

This team looks good, but I don't see them beating the Lakers. They should win their division though.

OK, Your Biological Father, if you think allowing Memphis to score 123 points and getting out-scored in the paint by the soft Indiana Pacers is adequate defensive intensity, that's fine, but I doubt it will be enough against the likes of the Lakers, Spurs, Suns, Celts and Magic. And in my book, rebounding is very directly related to defensive effort. It's all about positioning, which means out-working your opponent before the shot even goes up. In fact I have been watching, and I've seen to many lay-ups by opponents who get to the basket unchallenged. I hope Coach Karl can address this one weakness I've seen.

doesn't "best start in 24 years" equal 1985, not 1975?

Well then you shouldn't have left such a good team for a few more dollars. Poor Dahntey has to actually "work" now. I hope he realizes the value of a good point guard.

Ok. I am a huge Mavs fan because I was raised in Dallas. However, that being said, I have total respect for all the players and am not one of those people that just trashes another team just to trash them. First of all, I am sorry to Denver for the stupid comments Mark Cuban made last year. Secondly, I have to admit that I think this is Denver's year. They are a very scary team. They have loads of talent and can shoot lights out on any given night. I am not saying Boston can't but I think Denver is way more scrappy than Boston is. I just love basketball and of course want my Mavs to win but I also love to watch a good championship. I also love it when teams that haven't been there in a while make it as it gives me someone to root for. Good luck to all the teams. It will be a tough year as there are quite a few teams that have a good chance to make it as talent is only getting better and better.

Nice win Nuggs. Keep focused on this road trip. Blazers and Jazz lost tonight....always a good thing. With the conference being tight, a division title may end up being the route to a 4th seed and home for playoffs. Look at last year, with 3 teams finishing with 54 wins.
