Mavericks beat 0-4 Clippers 93-84

LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks were the team the Los Angeles Clippers beat for their first victory last season. Dirk Nowitzki(notes) and his teammates were intent on not letting it happen again.

Nowitzki had 24 points and nine rebounds, leading the Mavericks to a 93-84 victory on Saturday night and handing the Clippers their fourth straight loss to start the season. Last year, Los Angeles started out 0-6 before beating Dallas at Staples Center.

“The Clippers are a much better team than their record reflects,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “We were in this exact situation last year—they were winless, but they got us and it sent us into a bad stretch. Tonight we were able to make the plays down the stretch to get it done.”

The Mavericks, coming off a victory over the NBA champion Lakers on Friday, could do no better than a 55-all tie with the Clippers at halftime.

“There was no letdown,” Carlisle insisted. “Our concentration and our attitude was great coming into this game. Our guys knew that this was going to be a tough game. Look, it’s hard to win in this place, whether we’re playing the Lakers or the Clippers. To get out of here with two is an accomplishment.”

The Clippers made only one field goal over the final 7:12, a seven-foot hook shot by Chris Kaman(notes), who led them with a career-high 27 points on 12-for-19 shooting. He also grabbed 11 rebounds.

The 7-foot center, in his seventh NBA season, has scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games for the first time in his pro career after getting 22 on Wednesday against Phoenix and 21 on Friday at Utah. Only four other times had Kaman he recorded 20 or more in back-to-back contests.

Kaman’s previous career high was 26 points. The Clippers have lost 11 of the last 14 games in which he’s had at least 20.

“I played the same as I always try to,” Kaman said. “I got to post up a lot tonight and I had good looks throughout the game. I was patient, and my teammates helped me get good shots.”

This is only the fifth time in the Clippers’ 40 years of operation that the club lost its first four games. They got off to an 0-16 start in 1994-95, and lost their first seven in 1982-83 when the team was based in San Diego. The Clippers also lost their first 17 games of the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, which was 50 games long.

“We need to start playing harder in the fourth quarter,” Eric Gordon(notes) said. “We also need to do a better job of stopping the other team on defense. We had a couple of good runs and a few leads, but they made big plays and made the tough shots in the end.”

Jason Terry(notes) scored 16 points off the bench for the Mavericks, including a 3-pointer that put them in front to stay with 5:07 left.

“We felt like we just had to come out with some energy and keep ourselves in the game,” teammate Jason Kidd(notes) said. “We did that in the first half, then we got the lead in the third quarter. We couldn’t score there for a while in the fourth, but we found out last night that we can play defense, and that carried over to tonight.”

Leading by nine points after three quarters, the Mavericks missed nine of their first 10 shots in the fourth and committed three turnovers as the Clippers went on an 11-2 run that pulled them into an 82-all tie with 7:12 to play. Gordon hit a 3-pointer during the rally and Craig Smith(notes) capped it with a layup.

But Terry answered the Clippers’ run with the Mavericks’ third 3-pointer of the game and Erick Dampier(notes) helped seal it with an alley-oop dunk with 2:15 left. Dampier had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kidd had 10 assists along with three points and six rebounds.

“The game came down to us getting 11 stops in the last 12 possessions. It’s just great evidence of what’s going to help us win—and that’s activity at the defensive end,” Carlisle said.

Neither team led by more than six until Nowitzki made one of two free throws with 4:22 left in the third to give Dallas a 69-62 advantage. The Mavericks took their biggest lead, 74-62, on a 16-footer by Nowitzki that capped a 17-3 run with 2:47 remaining in the quarter.

Dallas played without reserve forward Drew Gooden(notes), who strained a muscle on his right side early in the fourth quarter against the Lakers and will undergo an MRI when the team returns to Dallas. The Mavericks also were missing Josh Howard(notes), who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle and left wrist in May; and Tim Thomas(notes), who had surgery on his right knee last month.

NOTES: Nowitzki scored 20 or more points for the 28th consecutive game, the league’s longest active streak. His longest such streak is 31 games. … The Mavericks have won 13 of the last 16 meetings overall against the Clippers, and are 14-6 against them at Staples Center since the arena opened in October 1999.

I always thought it was traditional reporting to lead the story from the winning team's side. I guess when it's NY or LA they automatically assume the world only cares about them.

The luckiest guy in America is at it again!

What goods does "Dunnothin" have on Donald Sterling? What has this man ever done in the coaching profession? He is smug, irritating and "inspires" his playersto NOT play! Absolutely amazing that anyone sees talent in this man!

Nobody in the history of sports has survived so many years! I only hope that "Dunnothin!" appreciated magic Johnson!

Thanks Magic, look at what you created. You actually made this man look good because we now know who the real coach was on "Dunothin's" Lakers!

The Clips need to run Dunleavy out of town, Sterling needs to sell the team to a better owner, The Clips need to move to a new city with a new name, and run B. Davis out of town too.

WRONG! When the Mavs won 67 games they were 12-0 without Howard. Howard shot 33% in the 4 consecutive losses to Miami in the finals. Howard averaged 13PPG & shot 29.6% in the Mavs 1st round loss to the Hornets. The Mavs just beat the Lakers without Howard & two others.

The Mvs will NEVER win anything as long as they have Howard & Terry ( the same Terry that shot 7-25, and 1-12 on 3's in the Mavs 6th game loss to the Heat in the finals.) Terry just averaged 6PPG less vs Denver in last years 2nd round loss than he did during the season, and shot under 35%.

Dirk Nowitzki scores more, rebounds more, & shoots higher % ( 54.4% vs Denver in the 2nd round)
in the playoffs, while Terry & Howard fall apart. Get rid of BOTH!

What's amazing is that there are no FAKER fans posting on this blog about how the referees screwed the Clippers out of this game, since they think that is the only way the Mavericks can beat the FAKERS.

Mavs are a contender with Josh Howard and so-so without him. Getting these wins while he is out is HUGE. Last years playoffs showed the truth. Killed San Antonio with Howard, fell apart in the second round without him. Let Howard sit as long as possible, he is the X factor for the Mavs.

These two games at L.A. don't tell the Mavs story. Check it out when the starting lineup is Kidd, Howard, Marion, Dirk and Damp. Although i can't imagine why Terry doesn't start and move Marion to Dirk's back-up. That is a bench who could rule. Second team...Berea, Gooden, Marion, and anybody else. And don't forget about the rookie point guard with the french name. WOW he can play and he's learning the game from Kidd. Depth is what the Mavs have this year that they havn't had since getting ripped off by officiating in Miami. I know it was forever ago but you never forget having something stolen.

Nice weekend for the mavericks. The Lakers played about as badly as they could, but as a veteran team they should be able to turn around a poor performance midgame and pull out a win. Credit Dallas for not allowing that to happen. The same ol' Clippers, with all that talent, continue to beat themselves. Mavs on 2nd of back2back nites gritted out a tough win. Overall, a better team than last year, contrary to what I said over the summer.

If only Cuban hadn't stepped in a kept Nellie Jr. from trading his beloved Josh Howard for Kaman
two years ago---- The Mavs might have done better in the playoffs the last two seasons.
Howard averaged 13PPG & shot 29.6% in the 1st round loss to the Hornets. Then last year
Dampier pulled a NO SHOW vs Denver, making Nene look like the Best center in the f'n NBA.

Way to go Damp keep working it Baby, I haven't lost faith in you. If you really want it bad you could take this team to the finals but you got to want it every day for four quarters at a time. Humphries can contribute a whole bunch to and the obvious line up including Shawn Marion, Terry, Barrea and the rest of the bench can start gellin like you know who. Take it to the next level and be remembered in the history of the champions. But you got to want it bad, really bad, and stay healthy and play hard four quarters at a time the entire four quarters playing PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL, that means zero turnovers, more focus on defense, take the ball to the basket and get the fouls, get to the freethrow line and make them all. Don't lose your head, concentrate on defense don't shoot untill you're sure of your shot or pass the ball to the open guy. Work with Damp till he can dunk at will over anybody including Lebron and Shak and all of those who have disrespected Damp. Erick needs to get mad and play Pro basket ball. If I had that body I'd be commanding respect from all.
    Sincerely
The The Greatest Mavs Fan of All. M.T.

I agree Lynell, the Mavs would have definitely gotten blown out last year with shooting this poorly. Marion and Ross has brought a more upbeat tempo with the defensive cognition for this current squad. I like our chances once Howard comes back. I just hope he stops getting hurt and become more of a leader, which maybe asking for too much. Nothing wrong with wishful thinking..........

we didnt shoot that well from the field...if you ask me our defense won the game for us... if we wouldve shot this poor from the field, LAST SEASON, we wouldve have got blow out...but our defense this year is a lot better...were more physical and dampier was all blocking shots all over the place.

Good game Mavs. Clippers played hard tonight but the Mavs experience won this game. I am glad we finally got two wins in a row inside the Staples Center. Hopefully we can soak these wins in and continue playing good basketball. I like our defense in both games and it shows Mavs are more focus on the defensive end this year.

In contrary, Clippers should be 3-1 this year, but they really need to find ways to win close games. My heart aches for this franchise. They play hard but somehow come up empty as well as getting the short end of the stick. I stayed in L.A. many years and went to many games and every game was like a heart-breaker, so I feel their fans pain. Anyhow good win Mavs!!!! Way to beat up on the L.A.'s.
