LeBron’s 24 points lifts Cavs, 104-87 over Wolves

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—LeBron James(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers can relax a little. They haven’t lost their touch, after a rough start to this experimental season.

Determined to get the Cavaliers to play a complete game, James had 24 points and nine rebounds in Cleveland’s first victory of the season, 104-87 over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

“If they continue to play hard like they did tonight and move the ball like they did,” coach Mike Brown said, “we’re going to get some wins while we’re going through this process.”

James took most of the fourth quarter off, finishing with six assists in 34 minutes and avoiding his first 0-3 start in five years. He shot 10 for 18 from the field while the Cavaliers used the renovated Timberwolves to revive their defense, which allowed an average of 98 points in defeats by Boston and Toronto this week.

They were better offensively, too, thanks to that crisp ball movement.

Mo Williams(notes) added 20 points with six assists and no turnovers, after a mutual effort to get him going. Zydrunas Ilgauskus had 11 of his 15 points in the first half to help make up for some early lulls, and Daniel Gibson(notes) drained three 3-pointers during a 3-minute stretch of the fourth quarter to end any faint hope the Wolves had of repeating their rally from two nights earlier.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes) picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter, which let the Cavs briefly revert to their pre-Shaq look.

“We kind of know how to feel off each other and go off each other,” James said. “When Big Fella got into some foul trouble, that cohesiveness that we’ve had in the past regained itself.”

That’s the challenge for Brown, James and the rest of the team—figuring out how to incorporate O’Neal into the lineup without slowing it down.

“It’s hard for new guys, with the offense that we’re running and defensively. We do things different than most teams,” Ilgauskus said. “So it’ll take a little while for Shaq to get comfortable, and it’ll take a while for us to get to know where he wants the ball. He’s a force in the middle. Obviously when he’s out there we need to use him.”

Al Jefferson(notes), working his way back into form from knee surgery last February, had a quiet 12 points and eight rebounds with O’Neal jockeying for room with him underneath. Jefferson wished aloud beforehand he hadn’t lost those 30 pounds during rehab, because of this matchup with the behemoth O’Neal, who had six points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes.

The Wolves have an even bigger experiment in the works, trying to learn the “triangle” system under new coach Kurt Rambis. He’s taking a patient approach toward this young team.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers can go out there and play with teams. … No matter what’s going on, they’ve got somebody who can create opportunities and get anywhere he wants on the floor,” Rambis said. “We don’t have players like that, so we’ll have to fight, scratch and claw from the opening tip on.”

Jonny Flynn(notes) had 17 points for the Wolves, who again missed Kevin Love’s(notes) rebounding ability. They overcame that deficiency to turn a 16-point deficit against New Jersey on Wednesday into a buzzer-beating victory.

“Of course you’re going to struggle a bit with a new offense, an offense we never ran before,” Jefferson said. “The only time we ever ran this offense is preparing to play the Lakers in shootaround or practice.”

During the 12-2 run the Cavs used to stretch their lead late in the second quarter, James was the picture of cool.

He spent the first part of the period on the bench, watching the Wolves take a pair of one-point leads with their subs in, but shortly after re-entry he finished a fast break with a determined drive and spin dribble for a layup, foul and three-point play.

Then after a steal by Anthony Parker(notes), James raced to the hoop again and threw down a dunk from a foot or so inside the free throw line. His pull-up jumper gave the Cavs their biggest lead of the half, 51-38.

NOTES: Delonte West(notes) was inactive again for the Cavaliers. He hasn’t played yet because of personal issues. … Rambis was given permission from the medical staff to stretch Jefferson’s playing time. Bothered by a sore Achilles’ tendon this month, Jefferson has played 25 minutes in each of the first two games. The key will be how he feels the day after. “During the game he’s probably going to feel fine,” Rambis said. “We just don’t want to stress him too much that we send him backwards.” … Vikings offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie, who could probably post up Shaq at 6-foot-8 and 335 pounds, sat courtside. He posted a picture on his Twitter feed and exclaimed: “I’m so close I can trip the ref!”

@ knicks923...he's a life long Yankees and Cowboys fan....and that's ALL the Yankees hats mean...as for being "scared"...not at all....I guess the question would be this...why are so many New York fans-who think their city is the epitome of sophistication-so infatuated with the idea of someone coming to "rescue" one of your sports teams when he is from a state/city that you all think sucks?...

Prediction the cavs will make the playoffs this year at 42-40 and the Cavs will lose in the 1st round to the magic. Then the King Lebron James will come to the New York Knicks and bring us a championship with dwade or bosh in 2010-2011

@ give_and_go...first off...where do you think those assist stats come from?...from passing the ball...DUH!!

    THIS IS JUST FGA-FGM = FG%

GAME 1..LeBron=55%...rest of team=35%...LeBron had 30% of the attempts

GAME 2..LeBron=37%...rest of team=34%...Lebron had 23% of the attempts

    GAME 3...LeBron=55%...rest of team=45%...LeBron had 21% 0f the attempts

manipulating the numbers and presenting them in a way that supports your personal beliefs is NOT objective...the rest of the team not contributing is the reason he's been dominating the ball...the only game that is out of line is Boston and only because no one else on the Cavs was shooting...I'm seeing a near 50% shooting average from a supposed "ball hog"...given the team numbers, maybe he's not shooting enough

Including shot attempts that ended up in fouls...

    1. 28 shot attempts = LOSS
    2. 26 shot attempts = LOSS
    3. 19 shot attempts = WIN

Maybe Leball-hog James needs to dominate the ball less, and shoot less for Cleveland to win. Swing the ball, run an offense, and don't worry so much about individual stats like points and assists, and victories will follow.

tony s....you got it right...Shaq's misses are mostly from outside his "comfort zone" and he still isn't used to the ball coming to him without calling for it....Look at Parker the other night on the pass from LeBron...everyone on the floor has to EXPECT the pass with LeBron and Mo

Ason T...give it a rest...the only PATHETIC FOOL here is you

Lebron is very self centered. but he is also the best player in the nba & arrogance builds with that title. they'll figure how to use shaq. he is no longer a 30/20 guy, give it a rest, he's almost 38 years old. all they need him to do is clog the lane when the time comes. after they all get more familiar with each other they will start to feed shaq more so the the rest of the team can gel to his style. be a witness!

The judge ...you r nutts... wat did Z give you last year? you like not winning the chapionship because Z is too old to take us there... he didnt even show up in the playoffs.. if you push shaq into the ref he would turn around and eat you lol ... leave shaq alone ...concentrate on the coach ... he is the one that will make this work or not.

I love Z to death but shaq is better... once the big guy gets used to the offence it will be all good. they said he couldnt mesh in phoenix and they were wrong .. cleveland doesnt run nearly as much and shaq will figure it out ... the pick up im excited about is Moon ... boy he got springs for feet ... i want double alley oops like in NBA street lol ... once we gel it will be hard to beat us. Mike Brown needs to step up too ... he calls the plays .. and we look flat right now. We were also flat in the orlando series... i hope he comes up with some better offense soon.

Absolutely RIGHT Joyce #50. The Cavs need to get Shaq off the floor so that they can win. If I were his teammate I would be shoving him into the opponents so the refs could foul him out early.

People are going to like who they grew up with... a lot of basketball fans were haters on MJ ... they were the bird magic fans... now KB has haters that are the MJ fans and bird magic fans... LBJ unfortunately has haters that are KB fans and MJ fans and bird magic fans.... this will shift as the younger generations pick thier favortie players and thus grow up with them. LBJ is hated on for sure... but you dont sell all the shoes and jerseyes ect without having a huge fan base. Trust me on this in 3-4 years no one will talk about magic and bird ... and yes even the MJ sheen will wear off and KB and LBJ will take thier place as the younger audience will not have seen MJ in action. Whose better? i got no clue... i know that point can be argued once KB and LBJ are done and we can look at both players complete body of work. Untill then be happy knowing you are watching 2 of the best players in history playing at the same time in KB and LBJ...

Ilgauskas should be starting and that slob O'Neal should be coming off the bench. 19 minutes and only 6 points and 7 rebounds during that time? He's just taking up valuable space out there, he needs to retire.
