NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Who needs the preseason?

Emeka Okafor(notes), a year-round fitness fanatic, missed it and seems to be doing fine.

Chris Paul(notes) scored 31 points and Okafor capped another strong performance with two key blocks in the final seconds to help the New Orleans Hornets beat the Sacramento Kings 97-92 on Friday night.

“I’m just happy that I was able to contribute, considering that I didn’t have a preseason, that I could come in, have a couple decent starts and kind of put everybody’s mind at ease,” said Okafor, who came to New Orleans in a trade that sent Tyson Chandler(notes) to Charlotte. “It was on my mind, having a decent first impression to just kind of calm everybody’s nerves.”

After sitting out training camp and all eight preseason games with a sprained toe, Okafor returned for the Hornets’ season-opening loss in San Antonio and was one of the bright spots with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

As the Hornets prepared to play their home opener against Sacramento, coach Byron Scott, known for his grueling training camps, smiled when asked what Okafor’s debut told him, replying that his training camp and preseason apparently don’t mean much.

Okafor then more or less went out and proved that very point against the Kings with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks for his second straight double-double. Paul scored 13 of New Orleans’ last 17 points and David West(notes) added 13 points for the Hornets.

Tyreke Evans(notes) scored 22 points and Kevin Martin(notes) added 20 for Sacramento, which led 91-88 on Martin’s running floater off the glass.

Paul then hit the shot of the game, a spinning layin off the glass as he was fouled while absorbing a knee to the groin. After bending over at the waist for a few seconds, Paul went to the line and made the free throw to tie it at 91 with 1:16 to go.

New Orleans led 93-91 on Okafor’s one-handed follow jam of Paul’s missed jumper. Sacramento’s Jon Brockman(notes) missed his second of two free throws and Jason Thompson(notes) got his 12th rebound to give the Kings another possession, trailing 93-92 with 15.2 seconds left.

Evans dribbled toward the lane, but his mid-range jumper was blocked by Okafor and Paul snagged the loose ball before being fouled and hitting both free throws to make it 95-92 with 5.9 seconds left.

Sacramento then got the ball to Martin for an attempted 3 in the corner and Okafor made another key block. The Hornets quickly got the ball to Paul, who hit two more foul shots.

“It was an unbelievable block by Emeka,” Paul said. “I told him I was going to stay with Kevin, but he actually lost me for a second. Emeka helped me.”

Julian Wright(notes) scored 11 points in his new role as a starter and was providing pressure on Okafor’s block of Evans. Peja Stojakovic(notes), now coming off the bench behind Wright, had 10 points.

Andres Nocioni(notes) had 16 points for the Kings, who won an NBA-worst 17 games last season and are still looking for their first victory under new coach Paul Westphal.

“I’m very proud of them,” Westphal said. “They proved they can compete. It’s the little things we need to learn as a team. … We were in position to win the game. They closed the deal and we didn’t.”

Sacramento outrebounded New Orleans 52-43, but shot only 37.5 percent (36 of 96), was outscored 26-13 at the free throw line and was held to 30.4 percent shooting in the second half (14 of 46). New Orleans shot 45.2 percent (33 of 73) for the game and had nine blocks.

The Kings led by eight points when Beno Udrih’s(notes) 3-pointer capped an 8-2 run late in the third quarter to put the Kings up 73-65. Paul’s driving layup and 3-pointer with a second left in the period helped the Hornets pull to 75-72.

Stojakovic’s second 3-pointer of the game and Darius Songaila’s(notes) fadeaway evened the score at 77 with 9:25 left, marking one of 15 ties in the game.

NOTES: Paul is averaging 28.5 points through two games. … Former LSU star Marcus Thornton(notes) was inactive for the second time for New Orleans. Scott said that although Thornton is a good shooter, he still has a lot to learn in terms of positional play on both ends of the court. … The Hornets are 6-1 in home openers in the New Orleans Arena. … The Kings play next Saturday night in San Antonio, their third straight road game to open the season before they return home Monday night against Memphis. … The announced attendance was 17,306, officially a sellout.

angloamer...ummthe hornets play in new orleans that comment made no sense.

anyways, although the kings lost, i really like how we played in the loss to the hornets. tyreke is a monster and brockman...he had ten rebounds. he should be getting more playing time we need the rebounds. as far as k-mart....9-29 for the game is terrible. he needs to learn to take better shots instead of shooting 10 3's a game, in which he made only two last night. he sure likes having the ball, but wont play defense. somethings wrong with that picture.

Laughing at Coaching comment. Mole with your patience im sure you have never finished anything in your life, lol. PW will get this team to compete, thats what we need, it a first step. You will have plenty of bagging time to do as the season progresses, you look silly doing it after the second game.

Okafor will be much better with New Orleans then with the Hornets, but they are not ready for the big boys yet.

Tyreke Evans has that ROTY look. Kings played pretty good in a loss. In OKC they just looked horrible, but tonight they gave effort and made strides toward improvement. Unfortunately to strengthen their defense, they had to pretty much bench their starting center Hawes. Hawes can not play defense against NBA quality opponents. This is bad for the Kings. Hawes is the only legit 7 footer on the team. The Kings need a 7' center that can back up and actually start while Hawes learns to play team defense. I don't think Hawes will ever be a great one on one defender, but he needs to learn to play well enough to get minutes! Right now, they have to start May who is only 6'9" because they need someone who will challenge for position and go after rebounds in the paint. Hawes gets pushed right out of the way and scored on by centers and forwards. Pretty much anyone can score on Hawes right now. Anyone who thought PW made a bad choice starting May needs to look closer. He doesn't have a CHOICE! Teams go right at Hawes because he is playing S O F T! The guards are playing better "D", the forwards are playing decent "D", Hawes isn't doing his part.! I feel like if Hawes had played in the Summer League, he would be doing better now and he wouldn't be so far behind everyone else. His decision to skip summer school has really hurt the Kings. I think the next draft will be for a center that isn't skinny, and weak, and can hold his ground on defense. Hawes could do better but he has to work H A R D! So far he is getting replaced by a 6'8" forward because the Kings need to win games. What else is PW supposed to do? Even Brockman at 6'7" plays better defense inside than Hawes!

We were already thin in the front court, and Hawes not being able to play is a disaster! Maybe we need to trade Kenny Thomas and Hawes for a REAL center unless Hawes can drastically improve his defense. I've heard a lot of commentators and coaches say that defense is about effort and determination more than it is about skill. If this is the case, Hawes better start increasing his effort and become VERY determined on the defensive end very very soon or he will be on the way out. The Kings have invested a lot into Hawes, and it would be a shame to have him turn out to be a flop. Maybe he doesn't want to play for the KIngs? Not going to summer league, coming into camp out of shape, and playing poor defense? Sounds just like Brad Miller! I HOPE Hawes isn't following Miller's example! Besides, Miller had a WAY better offensive game. Almost good enough to make up for his total disregard for defense. Hawes ain't that good. I don't think anyone would take Hawes in a trade right now. He just needs to get better fast!!

Other than Hawes, the Kings look like they want to compete. Casspi and Evans look like great draft picks, and even Brockman has contributed to the cause. I think the Kings should start: 1) Evans, 2) Martin, 3) Casspi, 4) Thompson, and 5) May. That lineup, while small, would win some games. Bring Brockman in as the first big off the bench and Sergio and Beno as the guards. If Greene cant play, they need to ship him to the CBA. Evans is going to be the STAR on this team. Martin will be the second best, now the Kings need that one other person who can score. JT can score, but he rushes his shots and misses layups. Maybe Casspi is that third scorer? Hopefully. Go KINGS !!

once again Byron Scott exercises little patience with a young talent--MARCUS THORTON has proven that he can play -not dressing him for playbook issues seems reminiscent of the waste of J.R Smith's rookie year as he sat behind a group of no-talents our 2 guard play has been mediocre for years if this kid is not going to be playing .trading Rasuel Butler seems so-so-so- stupid.

To coach Westphal....when the Kings loose, in which they have not won a game since opening day.....Unstead of practicing plays, make them practice shooting, shooting, shooting until they learn how to shoot......

I expect by mid season we will have a coach. When will he give the 2 draft choices a chance to show what they can do.This coach doesn't have to.He is so bad he can tell by just allowing them to sit on the bench.
