PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Mike James(notes) made two of three free throws with 0.3 seconds remaining to lift the short-handed Washington Wizards to a 90-89 preseason victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night.

James was fouled by Willie Green(notes) as he attempted a 3-pointer.

“I’ll take it,” James said. “I feel real good out there. I just tried to make a play and got the call. It went our way, which is a good feeling.”

It was a fairly controversial ending and left further questioning about the replacement referees. Reports are circulating that the locked-out referees could have an agreement to return in time for the regular season.

“I didn’t think it was a foul,” Green said. “From what he saw, he called it. These guys have a tough job and they’re doing the best they can. That call didn’t lose the game for us.”

The 76ers appeared to have the win wrapped up when Green hit a free throw with 1 second remaining. On Philadelphia’s final possession, Green pump-faked Young and drew a foul. Green missed the first attempt and made the second for the one-point lead.

Washington inbounded at midcourt and James, who finished with 15 points, was able to get off the shot.

Randy Foye(notes) scored 17 points for Washington (4-3), while Caron Butler(notes) added 16, Brendan Haywood(notes) 13 and Andray Blatche(notes) and Nick Young(notes) had 10 each.

Andre Iguodala(notes) scored 19 points for the Sixers (5-2), who have lost two of three. Marreese Speights(notes) added 14 points, Lou Williams 13 and Jason Smith(notes) had 11 for the Sixers, who started 4-0 in the preseason for the first time since 1978.

The Wizards played without flu-ridden guards Gilbert Arenas(notes) and Mike Miller(notes) as well as guard Javaris Crittenton(notes) (left foot) and forward Antawn Jamison(notes) (right shoulder).

A sparse crowd attended the game with patches of empty pockets of seats in the lower level. The final Bruce Springsteen concert ever to be held across the street at the Spectrum may have played a role.

A dunk by Smith put the Sixers ahead 77-75 with 6:02 remaining, but the Wizards reeled off a 9-0 run to take an 84-77 lead with 4:06 left.

Philadelphia went on an 11-2 run to and went ahead 88-86 when Speights hit a short hook shot with 43.8 seconds remaining.

Young followed with a 15-foot jumper to tie the game at 88 with 31.9 seconds left.

The game was ragged throughout the first half with Washington taking a 39-34 halftime lead.

NOTES: The teams combined for 19 turnovers and 54 missed field goals in the first half. … F Rodney Carney(notes) (left hamstring strain) missed the game for the Sixers.

You could also say that the NBA has been getting away with bending the rules for years now so the NBA refs are use to calling it that way. The replacement refs are just calling it by the rules. The foul at the end of the game was a bit ticky tack but they're just doing the best they can. I'm a wizards fan and when I heard the foul called I just laughed because that doesn't get called in the NBA. The one rule that bugs me is that these players take 3 or 4 steps on their way to the basket and now they're bending the rules for that. That's ridiculous and takes away a major part of the game. Let's just call it handball and get it over with! But I still watch so I guess I'm entertained a little bit :)

i had been hearing about how bad these replacement refs are but hadnt really seen it because so few preseason basketball games are on tv. i got a chance to finally watch my sixers play in the preseason last night on tv for the first time this preseason( the sixers lost by one, but oh well). i know that its only a preseason game, but terrible would be an upgrade for what these refs are.if you look at how many fouls are being called in games this preseason its beyond belief. hopfully these ref are just getting the kinks out now, because if things continue like this during the regular season we could easily have NBA games that last 31/2 4 1/2 hrs because of all the fouls being called. that foul last night on willie green.... with no time on the clock was horrible, and not just because it cost my team the game, but because fouls like that have been being called all preseason. you cant call that foul in a regular game situation. or even worse, a playoff game.the NBA has to do something about the regular refs. this season is gonna be unbearable to watch if refs are gonna call 50 fouls per game. GO SIXERS!
