Magic stun LeBron, Cavaliers 107-106

  • Print

CLEVELAND (AP)—LeBron James(notes) chewed on his fingernails as he talked quietly with Mo Williams(notes) in the corner of Cleveland’s muted locker room.

As they reviewed the game’s final seconds, the two stars stared blankly at a boxscore floating in an ice tub above James’ feet.

They looked stunned. And for good reason.

No longer untested, no longer unbeaten. The Cavaliers finally met their match in the playoffs.

Dwight Howard(notes) scored 30 points, Rashard Lewis(notes) added 22 and the Orlando Magic rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to hand James and the Cavaliers their first loss of the postseason, 107-106 on Wednesday night in the Eastern Conference finals opener.

James finished with 49 points, eight assists and six rebounds, but the league MVP limped off the floor after Cleveland’s loss—just its third in 46 home games.

“Nobody said it was going to be easy,” said Cavs guard Delonte West(notes), who missed an open 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. “This one hurts.”

Lewis made a 3-pointer with 14.7 seconds left and the Magic, who dethroned the champion Boston Celtics in seven games in the previous round, survived two shots by Cleveland in the closing seconds. Williams missed a catch-and-shoot jumper off a jump ball as the horn sounded, dropping the Cavs to 8-1 in the postseason.

“It’s a big victory,” said Howard, who broke one of the shot clocks with a dunk in the opening minutes. “We kept fighting the whole game. We kept believing we could win.”

Hedo Turkoglu(notes) scored 15 points with 14 assists for Orlando.

Game 2 is Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena, which fell eerily silent after the Magic’s win.

As fans headed to the exits, they turned to observe James still on the floor and bent over in obvious pain. He was bothered by cramps throughout the fourth quarter and was tended to by Cleveland’s training staff before slowly making his way to the locker room.

“I’m not hurt,” said James, who felt the long layoff—the Cavs hadn’t played since May 11—may have contributed to the cramping.

Cleveland gave this one away. The Cavaliers lost their grip on the game with a stagnant third quarter that carried into the fourth. Also, the Magic shot 55 percent from the floor—59 percent in the second half—against the league’s top defensive team.

“That’s unacceptable,” James said. “We should have lost.”

Orlando, which went 2-1 vs. Cleveland in the regular season, took its first lead at 85-84 with 10:06 left when Anthony Johnson(notes) buried a 3-pointer from the left corner. The bucket seemed to suck the air out of the raucous building and Cavs coach Mike Brown quickly called a timeout to stop the Magic’s run and get James back in.

The Magic, though, kept making big shots with Lewis hitting a jumper with 31.6 seconds left to give Orlando a 104-103 lead.

James then drove and scored on a runner while drawing a sixth foul on Howard, who added 13 rebounds. James completed the three-point play for a 106-104 lead but Lewis came down and nailed his 3-pointer over a closing Anderson Varejao(notes).

“You got to play 48 minutes,” Lewis said. “The most important thing is to play 48 minutes. We played only one half but it was the second half.”

On Cleveland’s last possession, West missed his open 3 but James was able to tie up Turkoglu for a jump ball. James tipped it behind him to Williams, but his last-second prayer hit the back of the rim and the Cavs walked off knowing they had given up home-court advantage for this round.

“This is good for us,” Brown said. “We didn’t expect go undefeated.”

Williams ended the first half by swishing a 67-footer to give the Cavaliers a 63-48 lead.

Taking the inbounds pass with 1.7 seconds left, Williams dribbled once and sent a high-arching shot like the ones he and the Cavs’ shooters work on at practice toward the basket. When it splashed through, James raised his arms and then wrapped Williams in a bear hug.

It was the third consecutive Game 1 in these playoffs that the Cavs have closed the first half with a buzzer-beating bucket. James did it against Detroit and Atlanta.

In the Orlando locker room, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy ripped into his players for not stopping James, who had 26 in the opening half.

“He told us, ‘We’re all witnesses,”’ Howard recalled, using the slogan James has popularized with his commercials. “That got us fired up.”

Leading by 15, the Cavs got complacent and lost their offensive rhythm in the third quarter. They stood around either waiting for James to do something or settled for jump shots that didn’t fall.

Orlando seized the chance to get back in it and with Courtney Lee(notes) and Mickael Pietrus(notes) hitting 3-pointers, the Magic outscored the Cavaliers 30-19 in the period to pull within 82-78 entering the fourth.

Notes

Orlando’s bench outscored Cleveland’s 25-5. … NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown sat courtside. … James isn’t surprised that he, Howard, Kobe Bryant(notes) and Carmelo Anthony(notes)—all members of the U.S. Olympic team that won gold in China last summer— are all still in the playoffs. “We all worked really hard,” he said. “That experience was great for everyone.”

ddizzle is correct....LBJ should have taken it to the rack on the last possession....why not? he already forearmed pietrus to the floor and surely would have gotten the call against gortat.

b ut for reall yall, at the end of the day anyone can winthis thing....thats why they play'em, however, its this mans opinion that the magic are deeper and will ultimately win....you know we had a couple of guys here in orlando that the press used to call the coming of the next MJ.....penny hardaway and tracy magrady....it didnt really work out for them....i actually feel bad for LBJ, having so much expectations being placed on him...its not really fair IF you dont constantly invite it..... and i think that is why he is hated on so much....a little bit of humility...just a little bit and i think non-cavs fans would probably have a whole lot more respect for him....its just a matter of class.....a great man once said...a man is judged not on how he sails in calm seas rather in rough seas will his true make-up be revealed.(i am para-phrasing of course) the seas just turned...will he rise up? we shall see!

Great game by the magic..I said this could happen and should happen, and it did. Got to admit didnt expect it to be game 1! And did anyone notice Howard didnt touch the ball in the post at all those final minutes..and whats wit the refs? alot of miss calls and calls that should not have been. LeBron traveling (as usual). Overall great game plan for the cavs. Shut down everyelse and play tough against lebron. Kinda like reving the engine in a car til you blow a gasket..LeBron was defintley on overload(cramps at end of game)..Not worried about the Denver/LA matchup. still think Denver wins the series. If K-mart doesnt throw that pass out of bounds in those final minutes, maybe they take game 1. This series goes 6 or 7. Denver wins. Kobe needs more(adequate) help. Odom, their most dynamic player, given his size and versatility, disappears some games

@861, bigrith47, you can't ignore the other more relevant stats. Orlando beat Cleveland by 29 and 11, and only lost by 4. The Lakers had 2 10+ point wins, including at Cleveland. The Cavs may do well against teams with no defense, but they choke against real teams. Lebron seems to care about what people think of him, but other teams just care about a championship. Magic in 5.

1..2.....3........4........... Is D. Howard out of the restricted area yet?.... No damn wonder he gets 20+ bounds so much.... Damn the 1 time he was in there so long ,I think I saw him tryin to rub 2 sticks together 4 a fire to cook marshmellows..haha.... No really that was a great game to watch...For those of u that say Cavs were getting all the calls, well that went both ways if u ask me...Iam a lifelong Cleveland any team fan...And i know thats my fault or whatever...Iam one that posted before about Orlando matching up well with the Cavs or even being better.... I agree with #843.... Orlando depends a great deal on the 3's...... If they dont start falling last night ,then what happens?... Cleveland slacked on Defense and that was really thier doom.. Well that and the other "Cavs" didnt show up...And 4 the ones that say Lebron was acting cuz they lost...... I will agree he tends to act at times...But that was 1 tired ball player...Did no1 c the timeout they had to call cuz Lebron was spent?...Iam not gonna be one of the fans that says Orlando sucks just because they are playing my favorite team... And truth is,Magic have shown this year they dont suck...I called it Cavs in 6 b4,and iam stickin with that....If they dont win this year,so be it...But they will still be my favorite team!! Come on Z,Mo,West,Gibson,Gibson.......Lebron needs ya.... GO CAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a Laker fan and know that the Magic will bring a better game than Cavs to the finals. I watched the 4th quarter of last nights game and saw a really good game especially the last 4 minutes. It could have went either way Give the Magic credit they made their shots, the Cavs didn't. James supporting cast couldn't handle the pressure and never will. The Magic now know they can beat the Cav's in Clev. Should be a good game 2 and if the Magic win it then the Cav's will never regain their confidence, their done as a turkey on thanksgiving day.

Nuggets will fall behind by 18 going into the 4th and after the subs give back 10 the game will end. Lakers in 5

Remember? Way too much LeBron hate and bashing. I'm just taking the other side and having fun with it. Someome on here's gotta do it.
